LAHORE, April 22: The Lahore Shopping Festival 2012 began after Punjab Assembly (PA) Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan and Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Irfan Qaisar Sheikh jointly inaugurated it at the Lahore Polo Club here on Sunday. Scores of people thronged the club to participate in the dazzling opening ceremony.
LCCI senior vice-president Kashif Younis Meher, vice-president Saeeda Nazar, former LCCI presidents Shahzad Ali Malik and Mohammad Ali Mian, former senior vice-president Sheikh Mohammad Arshad, United States Consul-General Nina Maria Fite, wife of the Indonesian Ambassador, Butar Latuconsina Kusdiana, notables and bureaucrats attended
the ceremony. A polo fixture was part of the festivals opening ceremony.
A joint initiative of the Punjab government and the LCCI, the festival will continue till April 29. The festival features a carefully choreographed array of events, including a three-day exhibition at the Lahore Expo Centre, a polo tournament, recitation of the Holy Quran competition, young entrepreneurs business plan competition, photography competition, vintage car rally, Punjabi cultural night, job fair, business walk, wrestling championship, motor bike rally, fashion show, energy conference and a softball cricket tournament.
The opening polo match between the teams of Changoz and Loto Carpets was played at the Polo Club (Jillani Park). The Changoz defeated the Loto Carpets by 6-1.
The recitation of Holy Quran competition among finalists of the qualifying round will be held on Monday (today).
It is a good effort not only to introduce various companies but also to provide an opportunity to the people to go shopping as well as participate in various social, cultural and sporting activities, Muhammad Iqbal, a participant, said while talking to Dawn at the opening ceremony.
He said though the economy of Pakistan had plummeted much due to massive electricity and gas loadshedding, holding of such events reflected the determination of the business community and the general public to rid these crises.
Speaking at the ceremony, the PA speaker said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharifs vision to turn the province into a hub of economic activities would soon bear fruit. We are making all-out efforts for the welfare of the masses gripped my miseries, including dearness, Mr Khan said and assured the LCCI officials the Punjab governments full support to
make the festival a success.
The LCCI president said the LSF had been designed to promote economic activities in the province. Mr Sheikh said that 250 renowned business groups were showcasing their products at the three-day first Punjab Expo.
On the sidelines of the exhibition, an energy conference would also be held where leading economic experts would be presenting solution to the ongoing power crisis, he added. He said a methodology to overcome the energy challenge being faced by the country would be given to the government. Two mega events a photography competition at the Lahore Heritage Museum and a Softball Cricket Tournament at Bagh-i-Jinnah would be inaugurated on Monday (today), he said.
Earlier, players/teams of competitions/festivals, including vintage car rally, folk dances, wrestling, cricket and other colourful activities, participated in a march past.
