Lahore Leads Mega Cities In Making Green Fuel From Solid Waste

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Apr, 2019 ) :With the growing population and declining resources solid waste management has become a monster getting out of the hands of the authorities in the country.

Lahore, the country's second largest city despite bulging size of the citizens had taken lead on other mega cities by generating green fuel from municipal waste.

Talking to APP, Lahore Waste Management Corporation (LWMC) official said the city generates around 6000 tonnes solid waste per day.

"The RDF is a potential alternate for fossil fuels as it is cheaper in price and efficient in combustion. D.G. Khan Cement buys 1000 tonnes of municipal waste from LWMC for making RDF to be burnt at the cement plant instead of coal. It emits less harmful emissions than coal which have considerable impact on mitigating pollution level," he added.

The cement plant team used to segregate ferrous and non-ferrous, non degradable plastic, glass, stones and other corrugated materials through different processing steps. It was then reduced to shreds and pellets to be formed a homogeneous mixture for burning, he added.

RDF, he said was ideal fuel to be used in cement plants, lime plants, coal fired power plants and also as a reducing agent in steel furnaces.

To a question, he said LWMC had established a compost of 500 tonnes capacity. "Around 250 tonnes of the remaining trash is put in that compost to form natural manure or substitute for soil fertilizer," he mentioned.

He informed that the remaining 4500 tonnes of garbage was dumped in the landfill siteand controlled dumping sites.

Karachi, the largest city in the country was generating 13000 tonnes of garbage per day where only 70 per cent reached landfill sitewhere the rest was residing in the streets and roads where the remaining creeping into the Arabian Sea, the Sindh Solid Waste Management board officials.

Capital Development Authority (CDA), Director Sanitation Sardar Khan Zimri informed that the Federal capital generates around 500 tonnes to 600 tonnes of garbage per day particularly in the rural areas of Tramri, Bhara Kahu, Khanna, Koral and Soham.

He said the major issue faced by the authorities were of solid waste management. "We have no proper landfill site while we have proposed one at Sangjani. An environment impact assessment (EIA) report of the proposed site has been advertised to be conducted in 3 months as without EIA we cannot outsource the project," he said.

He said that RDF production was initiated during the former regime when petroleum prices hiked at the global level. Two cement factories had bought municipal waste fromCDA to replace fossil fuel which was halted after decline in petroleum prices, he added.

Responding to a question, Zimri said RDF was Rs1 per kilogram and perfect alternate of timber as well. It was experimented at BariImam Shrine where caterers were provided special stoves made for RDF. They cooked a cauldron of eatables with a kilogram of RDF which was ample proof of this efficient green fuel.

"We have allocated 400 stations across the federal capital in sector I-9, Tramri, Kahutaand other locations to set up RDF production sites as the project is waiting official permission," he said.

. . . .
I hope we hire people to separate the trash, so that recyclables can be recovered. We have enough unemployed people that would be happy to have a job. It would also save us from importing so much raw material, just to use it once and burn it. We should implement what this Japanese town does, but pay people to hand in their recyclables if they sort them properly.

Only that which is left after all recycling efforts, and is truly trash, should be burned. Even food scraps can become compost to allow people to grow a fruit tree in or near their home and add the to Ten Billion Tree Tsunami.

I read somewhere that 10% of global energy needs can be met through burning garbage.

Imagine all the landfills near our major cities that can be cleared out, meet our power needs, and all the land that can be reclaimed for housing.
