Chinese Consul General in Kolkata Ma Zhanwu said Wednesday his country was mooting a bullet train service between Kunming and Kolkata, traversing through Myanmar and Bangladesh, reports NDTV.

A high-speed rail link could be established between the two cities with joint efforts of India and China, Zhanwu said at a conference.

"It will only take a few hours to reach Kolkata from Kunming if the rail link becomes a reality," he said.

The envoy also said that Myanmar and Bangladesh would benefit from the project.

"We may have a cluster of industries along the route. That increases the possibility of economic development of countries involved in the 2,800 km-long project," he maintained.

The project had also found mention at the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) meet in Kunming in 2015, he said.

The rail route was aimed at boosting trade flow in the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) corridor, Zhanwu said, adding that his country has been striving for the revival of Silk Route to increase connectivity from Kunming to Kolkata.

Asserting that the much-vaunted Belt and Road Initiative is not a scheme designed by China to conquer the world or its neighbourhood, Zhanwu said the project is all about "shared benefits and development" through consultations and discussions.

Kunming to India border will get done in a flash. Work on Indian side will take ten times longer and will have "dus bahaney" excuses. Good luck. :-)

.
As per Asia Regional Integration centre there has been no GMS meeting after 2013, so i highly doubt that this project was formulated in 2015 meet (which may never have taken place).
The way i see it is that India is opposing CPEC, so does US and many participating nations have become skeptical about the projects on their land, especially south east asian nations. So its a small initiative by China to get the other major nation of the region onboard which will help alleviate the doubts of other nations for the big ticket project, OBOR.
I dont think India will be too excited about this project.

I wonder how many passengers will be riding the expensive bullet trains? All the BD people will fondly ride the trains, but it must be free of cost. In case of Kolkata people, the train operator must be ready to pay each passenger a bonus for kindly riding it to visit Burma or Kunming.

The political situation in MM is not conducive for this kind of project.

. . .
Nope. There is no political problem in Myanmar. It's just the people are fed up with the military rule.
Unless Rohingyas problem is settled and Arakan army are rewarded with autonomy, no bullet train will get nod from Bangladesh. They can shove it to themselves.
Besides, can mm pay back the loan to China for the longest portion of that route that will pass through mm? China not gonna build it free for you to be honest. BD/India not going to help you with a single penny.

This usually leads to a lot of issues..revolutions...coups and what not.

Lol...Listen Myanmar is a poor country i agree but not so poor that it can't pay for a project like this. Also you are talking like as if Bangladesh is something like Dubai, Qatar and Malaysia? Bangladesh is developing rapidly i agree, but still it is a third world developing country. You guys borrow electricity from India, how can you afford a bullet train?

300 billion US dollar economy growing at 8% a year cannot afford a bullet train?

:disagree:

We buy electricity from India not borrow dumb ***. It was you crying about kyuk phyi port debt trap not us. Definitely you can't afford a bullet train track through Arakan mountains. Debt will be too high to be paid back.

Bangladesh can never afford a bullet train. First fix your current shitty railway system. It literally takes 6 hours to travel to Chittagong from Dhaka whereas in India it takes only 5 hours to travel to Bihar from Kolkata. And oh btw Bangladesh is not Dubai or Malaysia that it can afford bullet train.
Dhaka Chittagong bullet train project is going on full swing. All our cities will get connected by bullet train.

This is great proposal .

As i told you first fix your shitty railway system. It takes 6 hours to travel to Chittagong from Dhaka whereas in India it takes only 5 hours to move from one state to another. A superpower like India has no bullet train, how can a midget like Bangladeah afford bullet train?
BD is most prosperous in this region.
