This is a signal from US and bound to happen when democratic institutions are weak, not respected and backed by their citizens.
Lemme tell you a little story. When US attacked iraq, it wanted to secure some bases for operations. Two of the countries contacted were KSA and Turkey.
1-US contacted the royal family of KSA and after some "discussions" US ended up using Saudi bases.

2-Turkey ,on the other hand, took this matter to their parliament. the resolution was rejected by the parliament (albeit with narrow margins). Turkey PM, then informed the US authorities that their parliament has spoken and he was liable to abide by their parliament's decision.And there wasn't a thing US could do.

Until our people will not respect their democratic institutions, they will not strengthen the democracy. We will always remain something like KSA succumbing to the demands of US or whatever. Three things are necessary for breaking out of such vicious circle.
1-Strong Economy.
2-Global Goodwill.
3-Strong Democratic Values.
And we lack all of them as of today.
