ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif invited Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak to accompany him to his just concluded official visit to Britain, and the latter confirmed to go with him but refused the offer at the last moment.
“The chief minister did not explain the reason behind his refusal,” a senior federal
government official told The News. However, when contacted the chief minister’s spokesman confirmed that Khattak was given the invitation but could not honour it due to the time constraint.
“The chief minister had too many things to do in his province and that is why he can’t accompany Nawaz Sharif to Britain,” the spokesman said.Another KP government source said that Khattak was very upset for some time because of the serious illness of his grandson he loved too much and therefore, the chief minister wanted to be in Pakistan for this reason.
The federal official said that after Khattak’s refusal, Nawaz Sharif took Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik along to have provincial representation in his foreign entourages.A Punjab government official said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was independently invited by Britain for the official visit and was not taken by the prime minister with him as part of his delegation.
The UK Department for International Development (DFID) is funding a number of projects in health and education sectors in Punjab and KP.The Punjab official said that Khattak feared that when a comparison would be made between the performance of the DFID funding in Punjab and KP during discussions with British officials, he would be at a loss as the projects have worked much better in the majority province compared to his area.
There has been a considerable criticism on Nawaz Sharif by his opponents for mostly taking Shahbaz Sharif in his foreign visits and ignoring other chief ministers. Apart from the DFID funding in KP, this was also one of the reasons for inviting Khattak to accompany him to the UK visit.
The top British officials told the Pakistani delegation that the excellent standards being followed in Punjab in handling the DFID funding should be applicable in other provinces. The Balochistan chief minister is on record having requested the British government to significantly enlarge the programme in Balochistan. He received a positive response.
