Korea-China-Japan Cooperation Secretariat Opens in Seoul
Korea, Japan, and China opened a secretariat for trilateral cooperation in Seoul on Tuesday. The organization was finally launched 12 years after the three countries began discussions on the matter in 1999.
The opening ceremony was attended by Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, Chinese Ambassador to Seoul Zhang Xinsen, and Japanese Ambassador Masatoshi Muto.
"A new engine for the Trilateral Cooperation Vision 2020, which was adopted at the trilateral summit held last year, has now been provided," Kim said.
The leaders of the three countries announced the planned launch of the secretariat at the summit in Jeju.
Zhang said, "Trilateral cooperation faces new opportunities and challenges in the 21st century." Muto stressed the need to "strengthen future-oriented cooperation."
The secretariat will "expand the scope of trilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, starting with research on disaster relief, including safety of nuclear power reactors, and a trilateral free trade agreement," according to Shin Bong-kil of Korea, its first secretary general.
