Mirwaiz was in Kolkata to speak in a seminar, but even as he attempted to put forward his anti-India views, academicians, journalists and other members of civil society present protested against his rant. Former Army chief General Shankar Roy Chowdhury led the charge at the seminar where Mirwaiz' theory of 'Azaadi for Kashmir' fell flat.
At the seminar, General Chowdhary said, "Pakistan has tried every possible means to get control of the Kashmir Valley. They have tried proxy war, terrorism, insurgency and are now resorting to civil disobedience. Children died in the Valley because they were provoked by the Hurriyat and not a single Hurriyat man has been hit."
Meanwhile, Shishir Bajoria, Industrialist too slammed the separatists and said, "I think you have a responsibility. You are the Mirwaiz -- a religious leader as well. You do not want to be a part of the democracy and I believe it is because you don't have the strength."
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Bilal Gani Lone arrived in Kolkata to participate in 2-day conference on Kashmir issue.
Mirwaiz, accompanied by Lone flew from New Delhi to Kolkata, to participate in the roundtable conference Kashmir a way forward organized by Centre for Peace and Progress at auditorium of Academy of Fine Arts in West Bengal Capital from Sunday.
However, the duo were not allowed to carry forward their anti-India rant, as the civil society members protested inside, while several BJP activists protested outside the seminar venue.
The real civil society stood up in Kolkata and put the splittists and separatists in their place. They openly questioned the support of self styled civil society groups as the anger in Kolkata spilt over a day after the court ordered the police to file FIRs against separatists
On Saturday (November 27), a criminal complaint was filed by a Chandigarh court accusing Mirwaiz and Lone of waging a war against the country by making "seditious" statements.
The complaint was filed by an NGO in the court of Judicial Magistrate Paramjit Kaur who fixed December one as the date for hearing evidences in the case.
In his complaint, Global Human Rights Council Chairman Arvind Thakur contended that both the Hurriyat leaders had "clear intentions" to damage the integrity of the country.
"Both Farooq and Lone always praise the policies of Pakistan against India and they themselves claim that Jammu and Kashmir is integral part of Pakistan," he contended while adding that speeches of the two Hurriyat leaders at the seminar were designed to wage a war against the country and create circumstances detrimental to peace and harmony.
"The speeches of Farooq and Lone are highly imflammable and directly hitting the national integrity and was an abetment for waging of war by challenging status of Jammu and Kashmir," he contended.
Mirwaiz had been manhandled when he started speaking at the seminar on 'Kashmir Problems in Reference to Indo-Pak Relations' organised by Internationalist Democratic Party of Jammu and Kashmir.
