Kirti Chakra awarded

Just five months in the Army, a young Lieutenant, who died after killing four hardcore infiltrating terrorists and saving his colleague’s life in a fierce encounter in Jammu and Kashmir, will be conferred the highest peace time gallantry award Ashok Chakra posthumously.

The father of Lt Navdeep Singh, a third generation soldier, Honorary Captain (retd) Joginder Singh will receive the award from President Pratibha Patil before the start of the main Republic Day parade at Delhi tomorrow. Navdeep, who gunned down the terrorists single-handedly after he led from the front, was with “Veer Marathas” on the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez Sector.

Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award, has been conferred on three Army officers including for Lt Sushil Khajuria from Grenadiers regiment posthumously. The other two awardees were Lt Col Kamaldeep Singh of 18 Rashtriya Rifles battalion and Capt Ashutosh Kumar from Rajputana Rifles.

All the three officers were involved in anti-terrorist operations in J&K. Nine other army men have been given the Shaurya Chakra.

The Kirti Chakras and Shaurya Chakras will be given away by President Patil.

Lt Navdeep, an alumnus of the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, was deployed with his crack team to foil infiltration attempts by hardcore terrorists from across the LoC. He was commissioned in the Army on March 19, 2011,

On August 19 last year, Lt Navdeep and his Commando Platoon were deployed in Kanzalwan sub-sector in response to intelligence inputs about a bid by a large group of terrorists, equipped and armed with high calibre weapons.

Noticing the terrorist movement, the officer laid down an ambush and the unsuspecting terrorists walked into the trap.

In the gunfight which ensued, he single-handedly engaged and eliminated three hardcore terrorists from a close range.

Despite being grievously injured, Lt Navdeep saved the life of his colleague and killed the fourth terrorist, before succumbing to injuries on August 20.

Due to his gallant action and leadership, his team successfully eliminated 12 hardcore terrorists in one of the fiercest encounters along the LoC.

A total of 16 Shaurya Chakras including for the nine army men have been announced this year. Five awardees(one each) are form Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited and a Special Police Officer (SPO) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Two Shaurya Chakras have been announced for the personnel of Border Roads Development Board (BRDB) posthumously.

Lt Commander Rohith Mohandas Nambiar, a naval aviator, gets the Shaurya Chakra for displaying courage and initiative after he successfully landed a single engine Chetak helicopter when its tail rotor control cable was damaged mid-air in April last year.

Lt Gen N C Marwah, Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command, was onboard the aircraft when the incident took place forcing the aircraft into an uncontrolled spin.

Even though Lt Cdr Nambiar could not get any proper directional control from the aircraft, he manged to fly it back to the naval base INS Utkrosh from over 20 nautical miles out and landed it safely.

From IAF, the award will be conferred to Wing Commander Felix Partic Pinto, while from CRPF the award will be given to Assistant Commandant Ravindra Kumar Singh.

Captain Shakul Tyagi from Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited and Barkat Ali, SPO from Doda district in J&K will also get the awards.

Along with these, the President has approved three Bar to Sena Medals, 73 Sena Medals, three Nao Sena Medals and two Vayu Sena Medals.

RIP bravehearts.

BTW don't know how you will take this but I found it ironic when Pratibha Patil gave the medal to the father of martyred soldier who laid down his life for the country after setting another example of bravery.

That's it.

We've done our duty. Now their parents, wives and children can look at that medal on their wall whenever they need some money.

We've done our job. Let go to partay and drink ourselves to gay abandon! :partay:

I think that he is not married, as he is a 3rd Generation officer to the army, we definetly going to miss a blood line that has the courage and leadership to lead our troops to victory.
