The Russians have officially claimed they only use professional and contract soldiers in their current offensive in Ukraine.

Russia is not the US. It is poorer and less modernized. That means they don't have enough assets for real time coverage of Ukraine. Also I'm pretty sure US was jamming them or attempting to jam them.

When you don't have remote surveillance due to being jammed or not having enough air assets, it is a tactic used called recon in force where basically you send out your worst forces that are still a threat and force the enemy to open fire to expose themselves for your artillery and air power.

Basically... Bait.

Now you see that stopped happening because Russian Air Force has taken air supremacy and they already know where Ukrainians are.

The use of airforce by Russia was pretty much average. They purposefully did it to minimize the collateral damage or what is surprising for many.

The role of Russian air force was very limited because the objectives were acheived using cruise and ballistic missiles. Like destroying airfields , military depots etc. Once that done the already weak Ukrainian air force is in no position to cause any serious damage to the Russian troops on ground. If little drones, helicopters etc are still flying of Ukraine air force they can easily be dealt using air defense systems of Russian forces.

It's same everywhere. To control boots need to be on the ground. Hence the risk of losing men is inevitable.

It's possible many pilots don't want to get involved. Just speculating and don't have any evidence of that.

All the chairforce and Twitter propaganda aside, Russia has done remarkably well, considering the fact that Ukraine is a very large country of over 600,000 sq kms, around half the size of Iran. Russian now controls all of the east and will encircle and wear out Kiev. The Russians have only gotten serious in the past 24 hours. Ukraine has no chance, they will fold.
