Khalid Maqbool to be Altafs successor if charges brought
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Deputy Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui will be made the successor of Altaf Hussain, the MQM leader and founder, if the London-based leader is charged for any of the three offences he is being investigated for under English laws.
A source close to the MQM has told The News that Altaf Hussain has already discussed various contingency plans with his senior aides in the party with reference to the three serious investigations currently active in Britain involving him and his colleagues in the MQM.
The source informed that Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, who recently returned from America to play a frontline role in Pakistan, has the blessings of Hussain and enjoys his confidence more than anyone else in the party.
The Metropolitan Police is investigating the murder of Dr Imran Farooq and Altaf Hussain has been questioned under caution; he is being investigated under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and the third investigation revolves around allegations that Altaf Hussain broke English laws by inciting violence in Pakistan.
It is understood that Altaf Hussain and his colleagues fiercely contest all these allegations but they are prepared in their minds that the investigations can go in any direction and they acknowledge that they cannot predict an outcome of these probes.
Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui was brought to the frontline of the politics after the May 11 elections when Altaf Hussain demoted many of his colleagues; threw out some; made several redundancies and put several on the wait and see list.
Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui who has the absolute trust of the MQM leader and founder, the credible source said. Khalid Maqbool is a loyal guard and has proven his worth over the years. It was not for nothing that he was pushed to the most vocal, visible and prominent position in the MQM politics. Altaf Bhai thought hard over it and decided that he (Khalid) was the best man to deal with the serious issues in Britain that the party is having to deal with. If Khalid Maqbool is made overall leader in absentia then he will be aided by Amir Khan, a former critic of Altaf Husain who repented and was allowed back in the party, Kanwar Naweed and Irshad Kamali, said the source.
Siddiqui has been vocal in recent days condemning negative propaganda against the party and its chief Altaf Hussain.
Commenting about the ongoing investigations in Britain, Siddiqui has said that the MQMs workers and leaders have complete confidence in the leadership of Altaf Hussain and any negative propaganda can never distance them from him. He has also said that the party leadership in London is completely at ease and faces no problem.
Siddiqui in his appearances has been poised and composed and has given every hint that he enjoys the full trust of his leader.
