Key Military Achievements of India in 2013 | idrw.org
We are down to last few days of 2013 and idrw.org is bringing out Key Military Achievements which brighten up 2013
for India. 2013 started with lot of promises and is also ending with lot of fanfare, Indian engineers and Scientist have
done India Proud and 2013 was the year when India was not disappointed.
January 2013
K-15/Sagarika: Year started with a Bang, when DRDO tested fired India’s worst kept secret which is India’s first
SLBM (Submarine launched Ballistic missile) it was India’s first acknowledged test of the not so secret K-15 missile.
K-15 SLBM which has been in development for last decade has been tested in past, but there was no official
confirmation for past test. With K-15 India gate crashed into Elite Club of Countries who possess technology for under
Water Sea launch of a Ballistic missiles.

Brahmos SLCM: DRDO also carried out first successful test of Brahmos SLCM (Submarine launched Cruise missile)
from underwater pontoon off the coast of Indian Ocean, DRDO with this launch was able to demonstrate that they now
have underwater launch technology and development of other missiles is just another process now.
Nirbhay Cruise Missile: DRDO also test fired India’s first subsonic cruise missile “Nirbhay “. First test was dubbed
has “Partial success”. Nirbhay achieved successful take off and covered first 17 minutes without a glitch, but then a
Hardware malfunction forced DRDO to abort and self-destruct the missile mid-way. even though missile did not cover
all the test points nor hit its target, but missile validated many new technologies which were developed for the missile.

INS Arihant: India’s first locally developed nuclear submarine went critical, Nuclear reactor on board INS Arihant
was now generating its own power and the submarine was ready for user trials in High seas, before that submarine will
be Integrated with K-15 and Brahmos missiles, Reactor going critical on board INS Arihant has brought submarine one
step closer to Induction into Indian navy.
INS Vikrant: Launch of India’s first locally built aircraft carrier was widely covered by Indian and International media
and certainly raised some eyebrows in many countries. Carrier was launched when 83% of the fabrication work and
75% of the construction work completed. Ship is again in the docks now for fitment of various weapons and sensors,12/28/13 Key Military Achievements of India in2013| idrw.org

and the propulsion system, flight deck and the ship will be ready in 2016 for user trials.
September 2013
Agni-V: DRDO for second time carried out developmental trails of India’s longest ballistic missile Agni-V with range of
5500km to 8000km.
November 2013
Arjun Catapult: idrw.org was first to report development and trials of Arjun Catapult. Indian Army successfully carried
out user trials of Arjun Catapult last month .Mounting of 130 mm Catapult Gun on Arjun Chassis Mk-I was first carried
out by DRDO in 2012 and Development trials of that happened last year and earlier this year too . But only in Oct-Nov
that it cleared Indian army trails.
Pragati SSM: DRDO for the first time showcased export variant of Prahaar missile dubbed has Pragati at Seoul
International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX 2013) in South Korea. Pragati missile is progress over Prahaar
missile and comes with improved software which enhances it Battlefield survivability.
INS Vikramaditya: 2013 was also the year when long delayed INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier was finally handed
over to Indian navy in Russia, INS Vikramaditya is already on its way to India from Russia and will reach India next
month and will be based in INS Kadamba Naval base in Karwar.

Tejas IOC-2: It took Record number of test flights by Tejas prototypes to get Initial operational clearance -2 (IOC-2)
which made it One of the main highlights of 2013. Now officially Tejas MK-1 is inducted into Indian air force and from
next year Regular Indian air force pilots will be flying them instead of test pilots.
