Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala, popularly known as 'God's own country', has edged out Taj Mahal to become India's topmost travel destination in the Google's search trends for this year.

Kerala's famous hill station on the Western Ghats 'Munnar' also figures on the list of "Top 10" Indian destinations on Google's Zeitgeist site showing search trends from around the world.

According to a state tourism department release on Friday, Kerala stood at number position and Taj Mahal at number two followed by Wagah Border, Vaishno Devi shrine and Amarnath temple.

The search trends in the travel category released by Google, showed Munnar at ninth rank, followed by the Mumbai's Gateway of India.

Kerala Tourism Minister AP Anil Kumar termed the two listings for Kerala, including the number one spot, as a 'great encouragement' for the state.

"Kerala is a leader in online promotional activities in Tourism. We are one of the first government establishments to make use of the Internet to reach out to the world," he said.

"Kerala Tourism is a leader in coming up with innovative ideas. We have also engaged social media networks like Facebook and Twitter for promoting destinations," said Kerala Tourism Secretary Suman Billa.

Kerala Tourism website attracts over 250,000 unique visitors every month. The Kerala Tourism gets around six million views every year on YouTube.

Google's Zietgeist, which covers all search categories, answers the question of what the world searched for in a particular year.

The trending for the year means search queries with the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period compared to the previous year. Most searched are the search queries with the largest volume of searches.

Zeitgiest also contains highest searched subjects and topics.

Not surprising at all.

The Taj used to form part of the Golden Triangle - Delhi - Agra - Jaipur. With time, its popularity has waned due to poor road communication ( Jaipur - Delhi stretch) and the fact that the UP Govt has done little to develop / showcase areas around & within Agra . I took some relatives to Agra a while ago & felt sorry for what I saw.

Kerala on the other hand has done well by putting its positives in the show window. The boat houses of Allepy are way more popular & better run than those in Srinagar.

You have to hand it to the Mallus- they do a good job when they get down to it.

Taj Mahal is overhyped - Kerala deserves to be the top most travel destination (not only in google search alone)

Taj Mahal is overrated onlt because Agra is a third class, ******, overcrowded piece of sh!t city. But since it is UP, nothing will ever be done about it

I did not see it that way - Being from South, Agra itself was fascinating for me but Taj was a disappointment. As for Kerala, I was able to compare with Hawaii which I had visited only 3 months prior to my visit to Kerala and felt Kerala was incredible and better than Hawaii - I have been to Kerala couple of times before but that is when I get to see backwaters.

No surprise at all.
Kerala is the most beautiful state in India and surely one of the most beautiful places on the world. Furthermore our development level is as high as a european country. Infrastructure is good as well, even smaller cities are planing to build international airports.
