DEVIANT: Shia groups a serious threat to
Muslim community
ALOR STAR: RELIGIOUS teachers and
Muslim non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) have commended and fully support
the state government's decision to declare
Shia teachings as deviant.
They welcomed Menteri Besar Datuk
Mukhriz Mahathir's firm stand to ban Shia
teachings as they posed a serious threat to
the community here.
They said it was about time the state
gazetted the anti-Shia enactment so that
the authorities would have more bite to
carry out enforcement against those who
try to spread the teachings in the state.
Mad Daud Abdul Rahman from Baling said
Shia followers were out to confuse the
Sunni Muslims.
"They tend to add and subtract at their
own free will even the number of
prophets," said Mad Daud.
Sunni Muslims in this country follow the
teachings of Islam based on what is in the
Koran and the Hadiths as taught by
Prophet Muhammad.
Ashiq Elahi, 38, from Pondok Bukit Kobah
said he fully supported the move to ban
Shia teachings as their tenets had deviated
from the teachings of Islam.
He
estimated that there was about 1,000
followers especially in Pendang, Jitra, and
Jerai, and said the government had to take
strict measures to ensure the situation was
under control.
Pertubuhan Kebajikan Dakwah Islamiah
(Pekida) Alor Star official Mansor Ahmad
said there were up to 47 Shia groups.
Meanwhile Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia
(Abim) Kedah-chapter deputy chairman
Abdullah Din said once it was gazetted, the
Anti-Shia Enactment should be strictly
enforced.
Abdullah said although Shia teachings was
bannedfollowing the National Fatwa Council
ruling in 1996, its holistic enforcement was
never carried out.
"Shia-related books are easily available.
Many have read them and it is sad to note
that some religious teachers have been
influenced by it."
They were responding to Mukhriz's
announcement that the state government
plans to gazette the National Fatwa
Council's ruling in 1996 that Shia teachings
are deviant.
