New Delhi: The Kavach, a device for firing chaff rockets to decoy incoming anti-ship missiles, has been inducted into the Indian Navy, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Wednesday.
The minister told the Rajya Sabha in a statement that the first two variants of the equipment were now with the navy. He said that Kavach was not designed to have any target hitting capability.

Basically it's a Rocket based countermeasure system that launches short range Unguided rockets that create secondary RADAR reflection points and cause confusion to the homing trackers of Anti-Ship missiles and impede their ability to lock onto their primary target, it operates on basically a similar principle to the SONAR countermeasures deployed by submarines.

KAVACH MOD-II CHAFF ROCKET LAUNCHER

PURPOSE:
The KAVACH MOD-II system is designed to counter the threat of various anti-ship missiles by using chaff decoys. The system provides soft kill defense in a three-layered defense scheme.
MAIN FEATURES:
1. Multi barrel chaff rocket launcher of Long Range and Short Range .
2. Trainable limits - ± 180 degrees at the rate of 60 degrees per second (max).
3. Elevatable limits � 0 to 60 degrees at the rate of 60 degrees per second (max).

6. Modes of Operation � Confusion, Distraction and Seduction.
7. Compensation for Pitch, Roll and Yaw.
8. Accepting, analyzing and prioritizing up to 5 threats.
9. On-line capturing inputs from ship systems.
10. Suggests Course- to-Steer.
