Gilani demands end to HR violations in IHK
* Calls for revival of composite dialogue process with India
ISLAMABAD: Welcoming the recent statements on Kashmir by US President Barack Obama and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday hoped they will also play their role in the issues resolution.
The prime minister was addressing members of the Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the Kashmir Council. He said it was vital that the Kashmir dispute be resolved in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Kashmir and the United Nations resolutions, APP reported.
Gilani said the people of Pakistan observed the Kashmir Solidarity Day to demonstrate their unequivocal support for the struggle of the Kashmiris to achieve their legitimate right of self-determination.
Violations: The prime minister expressed the hope that the international community would play its role in bringing an end to the repression, violence and human rights violations committed against the people of Kashmir. He said the Kashmir dispute was not a regional issue but a global one.
He said the hearts of the people of Pakistan go out to the families of more than 92,000 Kashmiris who sacrificed their lives to uphold the ideals of freedom and liberty.
Dialogue: The Mumbai attacks had adversely affected the composite dialogue between Pakistan and India, Gilani said.
Kashmir Committee Chairman Fazlur Rehman said Pakistan desired to resolve the issue peacefully and in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiris.
He said the atrocities inflicted by the Indian security on the Kashmiris could not crush their aspirations for freedom, adding that coordination committees must be formed in the European Union to initiate dialogue for the solution of the Kashmir issue.
Gilani reiterated Pakistans principled stance that the country would continue to extend moral, diplomatic and political support to the just cause of Kashmir until it is resolved according to the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yaseen Malik said the Kashmiris had taken unified stance over the Kashmir issue and informed the international community ensure amicable resolution of the dispute. All political parties need to make a collective policy over the issue and must show unity in this regard, he said. staff report/app
