Kashmir separatists cheer Pakistan resolution supporting self rule

Giving Kashmiri separatists a reason to smile, Pakistan’s National Assembly passed a resolution calling upon New Delhi to withdraw all security forces from Jammu and Kashmir and accept the kashmiris’ right to self determination.

The resolution, unanimously passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday, calls upon India to include the people of Kashmir in the Indo-Pak dialogue, withdraw all security forces, accept Kashmiris’ right to self determination, release all political prisoners and investigate unmarked graves in Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution was passed following a speech by Pakistan’s Kashmir Committee chairman Fazlur Rehman.

Elated by the resolution, Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani called upon Pakistan to reconsider moving the United Nations to intervene in the Kashmir issue. “On a diplomatic level, Pakistan should consider presenting a fresh resolution in the UNO, which will favour Kashmiri people for their rights... Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif should look for possible ways of presenting a fresh resolution in consultation with specialists of international laws. They should mobilise their diplomatic offices to get the world community’s favour for the oppressed Kashmiri nation,” said Geelani.

Moderate Hurriyat chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq went a step further and met Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India to express gratitude for supporting the separatists’ struggle.

“Mirwaiz thanked the high commissioner for extending diplomatic and political support to the people of Kashmir for their struggle to achieve the goal of right to self determination. Mirwaiz also thanked all the political parties of Pakistan for their support to the Kashmiri people,” said a spokesman for the moderate Hurriyat Conference.

In Jammu and Kashmir though, Pakistan’s resolution invited sharp criticism. “Pakistan has no right to interfere in our internal affairs,” said Vibodh Gupta, BJP’s vice-president in the state. “We condemn their resolution. J&K is an integral part of India. Pakistan should vacate Azad Kashmir.”

I wanna apologise to Pakistan assembly.

We are doing everything we can in our part of Kashmir. But we cant honor the self determination of the people of Gilgit /Baltistan as we are not administrating that area.

We are also not administrating Aksai Chin, hence we are not able to impose the self determination concept there.

There are other areas of Kashmir, which pakistan handed over to China, we dont have any control there too.

So you see, there are some limitations that we have.

Nobody lives in Aksai Chin or the Trans Karakorum tract. The entire area is inhospitable, barren, at a high elevation, and can't sustain any sort of long term population. Holding a plebiscite for a population of zero would be hard.

Almost all of the Kashmiris live in your area of control, and the valley is the most hospitable and fertile area.

One thing which Pakistanis and Kashmiris can do and must do is spread that realization in India that their forces are occupying forces. When it comes to war or military struggle, the one having high moral ground wins. Here your expression actually reveals you own this guilt and that is the best a media or a resolution like can do. We both know things will have to be decided in the battlefield and this is where such cheers and guilts matter.
