Karzai says India is friend, but, Pak twin brother ISLAMABAD: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said his country would not allow its soil to be used against Pakistan, Geo News reported Thursday.

Addressing a joint press conference here with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani after signing the MoU, he said India has gone out of the way to help Afghanistan; but Pakistan is twin brother of Afghanistan, adding without cooperation from Pakistan, there could be no stability.

‘We are fighting against terrorism; I brought message from people of Afghanistan to the people of Pakistan,’ he said.

No country has ever showed more hospitality to Afghanistan than Pakistan, the Afghan president said adding both the countries discussed various affairs including agreements made on transit trade.

Responding a question regarding drone attacks in Pakistan, he said the issue is Pakistan-specific; accordingly, it was discussed neither in Afghanistan nor in the recent meetings in Pakistan.

However, PM Gilani said the drone attacks are counter-productive, as they force local people to join hands with terrorists against state and the Army.

Gilani said the government is trying to bring the US government round to the fact.

Karzai said, ‘We want future with no terrorism,’ adding peace is not likely to be restored in Afghanistan without the help from Pakistan.

Pakistan would be informed as and when Afghanistan receives some reports on terrorism, he stressed saying the terror wave is sweep away myriads precious lives and properties.

The PM Gilani said Pakistan has decided to enhance its cooperation with Afghanistan to eliminate the terrorism, adding bilateral ties between the two countries would be furthered.

Gilani said Pakistan will extend all possible succour to Afghanistan for its reconstruction, adding it was decided that the trade volume between the two countries would be ramped up.

‘We want to take the strategic partnership with Afghanistan forward,’ he added saying the war against terrorism will continue.

Pakistan understands Afghan plans and priorities, he observed.

Hamid Karzai said the destiny, grieves and happiness of both the countries are shared.

He said the ties between the two countries are on the path to being strengthened.

Responding a query, Karzai appreciated Indian efforts in Afghan reconstruction.

I hope that he may control the Indian Genral Consolour in Afghanistan where more than 6000 Indian working. Their main mission is to make terror in Pakistan and destabilize "Balochistan" as well.

but you know now brother and brother fight and kill each other not friend

Kabul 'does not want proxy wars'

Karzai says Afghanistan cannot be stabilised without Pakistani help in tackling the Taliban

Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, has said Pakistan has an important role to play in talks with the Taliban.

But he wants Islamabad to hand over a captured Taliban commander.

The detention of Mullah Abdul Ghani Brader, considered the number two to Mullah Omar, the Afghan Taliban chief, has been shrouded in mystery over Pakistan's true motivations.

Karzai, speaking in Islamabad on Thursday, insisted he did not know what Islamabad's agenda was or whether Brader was involved in any talks so far.

"Overall, regardless of these arrests, the Afghan government is pursuing a fundamentally changed policy approach together with Pakistan towards stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan," he said.

Pakistan's role

Brader's fate and what role Pakistan plays in any peace effort are among the many subjects that Karzai is expected to discuss with high-level Pakistani officials during his visit.

"We in Afghanistan are fully aware and recognise that without Pakistan and without its co-operation with Afghanistan, Afghanistan cannot be stable or peaceful," Karzai said after talks with Yousuf Raza Gilani, the Pakistani prime minister, on Thursday.

"It is also, I believe, recognised in Pakistan that without a stable and peaceful Afghanistan there cannot be stability or peace in Pakistan.

"Afghanistan does not want any proxy wars on its territory. It does not want a proxy war between India and Pakistan on Afghanistan.

"It does not want a proxy war between Iran and the United States on Afghanistan. It does not want any country ... to engage in any activity against another country in Afghanistan."

Reconciliation plans

Karzai, who met his Pakistan counterpart Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday, said Kabul is not as far ahead on reconciliation plans as some have speculated, but that it was committed to the process.

He said his government had contacts within the Taliban leadership "as high as you wish to go", but would not say if that included Mullah Omar.

He reiterated his willingness to talk to Mullah Omar "as an Afghan to Afghan".

"We are seeing a radical change in the rhetoric with both sides saying they are suffering the same problems," he said.

"They seem to be sending a message to the international community that a military option is not the best solution, that instead they would like to see international assistance trickling into tribal areas."

Britain has urged Pakistan to push ahead in the peace process.

The US has been more cautious in supporting a peace plan and has instead preferred to highlight programmes focusing on reintegrating disaffected Taliban fighters into broader Afghan society.

Pakistan has made it clear it wants a part in so-called reconciliation efforts between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

Many Afghans resent Pakistan's involvement in their affairs, but Pakistan's history of links to the Afghan Taliban, a group it supported when the group controlled Afghanistan in the 1990s, could make Islamabad an indispensable player.

Deadly missile attacks

Karzai's visit to Islamabad coincided with reports of deaths of up to 16 suspected fighters in two US missile attacks in Pakistan's northwest tribal belt.

Two successive bombing raids by unmanned spy planes hit a building and vehicles late on Wednesday in North Waziristan, a hub of Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked fighters near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

Pakistani security officials said more bodies were recovered from the wreckage on Thursday. At least five of those killed were foreign fighters, a senior security official in the region said.

Seven fighters were killed in the first raid targeting a compound and a nearby vehicle in Mizar Madakhel village, about 50km west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.

Nine more fighters died in a second attack, which hit shortly after as they pulled bodies from the rubble of the first bombing raid.

I think Geo didnt report Karzai's words fully. He didnt say Afghanistan dont want its soil to be used against paksitan, he said he doesnt want Afghanistan to be used in proxy wars between paksitan and india.

I dont think afghanistan and pakistan will ever go to war. why? there is no reason for it. once one of our stupid presidents called Mohammad Dawood wanted to attack pakistan to take NWFP(he was a strong pashtoon leader in his time), but it was all talk, apart from that there hasent been any direct war between the 2 countries.

The main position that Karzai has taken is correct. There should be no proxy war from Afghan soil. India should not indulge in proxy war against Pakistan and neither should Pakistan should allow use of its soil to attack India or Afghanistan. Same goes for other neighboring countries. With Pakistan cracking down on Afghan Taliban, it will only make the situation better. If they go ahead and really crack down on LeT/JuD groups then we can definitely see extensive peace and prosperity in the region and even resolution of Kashmir and other issues.

But last time I heard Pakistani people do not want Karzai government at all in Afghanistan.... What they want is Taliban rule there by supporting Taliban whom they consider as fighting the agressor and Karzai government as the proxy government of India US Israel blah blah... So will there be change in stance for the people of Pakistan

well you will find peoples both supporting Talibans and Afghan Government. I am not in a favour of both :P Karzai is America's puppet and Talibans are extremists. I want somebody else, a nuteral person to rule the government

Agree with the above, but regarding Kashmir, honestly i dont see any way out between paksian and india. they both want kashmir for themsevles, it looks imposible.

Dawn has reported that clearly with the same headline that Afghanistan doesnt want its soil to be used as proxy between Pakistan and India.

I think its the best chance to bring peace in the region.
