This research paper tries to find parallels between Kargil War and Operation Anaconda - Afghanistan 2002

Some Excerpts about 2 Major Battles i.e Battle Of Tololing and Battle Of Tiger Hill

The lessons learnt (credit Antimony)

Troops
  • Mountain warfare is the domain of light infantry and SF/SOF.
  • Acclimatization of troops is a crucial element.
  • Physical fitness of troops and mountaineering skills are of paramount importance.

Strategy
  • Arty should be the choice or arm for fire support, with limited dependence on air power.
  • Maneuver and tactical surprise
  • Concentrated fire support

Air power
  • Should be employed for destruction of fixed targets
  • Emergency CAS
  • Control the air
  • Keep own lines of communication open and destroy enemy lines of communication

Points to be noted;

Total Pak deployment = 1700 (so much for the 5000000000000000 Pak casuality rate bragged by ---)

Unsuccessful raids by indian army-- heavy casualities inflicted by thinly (undermanned) deployed (NLI) soldiers.

NLI troops inflicted heavy casualities on 3 Indian regiments -- despite facing "thousands" of Indian troops ( Naga + Grenadiers + Sikh Regiments) + massive arty barrages (1200 rounds every 5 minutes) & air strikes.

NLI dominated Tiger Hill for months -- ill equipped, under manned (massively outnumbered and outgunned) low on ammo and food -- rolling down boulders on India troops entrenched on the base after failed raids.

NLI was armed with few MG-3s, 1x - 12.7 MG and limited RPGs. The total strength deployed on the hill was estimated to be less than 100 troops--- who remained on the hill continously for months-- without proper clothing and equipment -- exposed to elements --- in an altitude surviving weather itself was a miracle !

1.Officially - Indian Military Ratio for High Mountain warfare is 1 : 9 against attackers.

2.Jawnas climbed the vertical cliffs with 25 kg weight right under the nose of enemy with heavy weapons including 12.7 MM DSHK and Artillery.

3.This was the 3rd time when Indian Army Captured those peaks first in 1965,1971 (finally annexed) and recaptured in 1999

.
what indian did in kargil wasn't a big deal in terms of a technological view point, the indian troops were for the most part reminiscent of the british troops in the falklands war, they were an army atleast a generation and a half behind a modern force. they had numerical advantage over 300,000 troops were in that sector and they had to route out 2-3000 pak army/mujhaideen. given the fact that they had constant air support and 24/7 artillery it wasn't that big a feat. they had everything to there advantage besides vantage point.

Wrong and factually incorrect.

Neither CAS is possible at those heights with Thinly populated air nor India had the Artillery Advatage since coordinates are provided by troops dominating the heights, thus IA relied on direct fire Mode and created havok

On the other Hand Pak had the advantage of height,NLI troops directed accurate fire on NH 1A.Moreover Pak had US Artillery locating Radar AN TPQ 36 While India had none.

We don't need accolades, we need the win...and thats all that matters!
At the end of the day, lesson learned (an important one, especially against a sneaky enemy like Pakistan) and we came out on top...in every aspect, diplomatically and militarily!
Also, Kargil is the reason that Pakistan has lost all footing and moral high ground when it comes to demilitarizing of siachen. Period!

you are mistaken, you've watched too many daal movies like border or LOC or some other bullshit bollywood movie. Being numerically superior having more artillery gun and better quality artillery pieces (which is what the indian army had) having 24/7 combat air support and having one of the best strike platforms in the mirag 2000 vs fighting a few thousands max 3000 men who don't have air support, don't have a huge no. or artillery guns, who are in open area and exposed easily to enemy airstrikes means nothing. the pak troops were ill-equipped to begin with, they didn't have enough to sustain them for more then a month at which point india waited it out and then attacked. kargil was a failure but don't act like it was some huge military victory when your own army held all the cards.

You are Excluding the Numerous of attempts of Counter Attacks Mentioned to Retake Positions Captured
No one is Taking Credit of NLI.Its Basic Theory in Mountain Warfare that One is on Height Has Always in Advantage

PS: Pakistan Never Admitted Its official Casualties Toll.India On the other Hand Published its Official Figures with 527 Casualties

Unsuccessful raids by indian army-- heavy casualities inflicted by thinly deployed (NLI) soldiers.

NLI troops inflicted heavy casualities on 2 Indian regiments -- despite facing closer to 2000 Indian troops ( Naga & Sikh Regiments) + massive arty barrages (1200 rounds every 5 minutes) & air strikes.

All hail to the courage of Captain Karnel Sher khan whose tactics and counterattack on tiger hill inspired every-man to fight till death

excellent Read.

Defeat is a Defeat no matter how much you sugarcoat it . Agar defend karne ki determination nae thi to NLI ko marne ke liye bhejna legendary tactical mistake thi .

It is akin to Indian troops deployment in Srilanka to fight tamil tigers . Determination was high but several other factors led to the pull out early from the game.

Looks like you have seen enough tollywood Hasina Atim Bomb.

The Air OP commenced at may last it was no friggin 24/7 air op and i don't give 2 hoots why NLI was ill equipped.May be you should ask Mushraf about that why he left those Poor NLI without even Food.A large no of senior army commander and probably air chief didn't even knew about Kargil (Operation Badr) says much about professionalism of your military.

Determination was not there right from the start from hailing NLI as insurgents to not providing military/air support . To think sitting in military HQ that India would not do whatever it takes to to evict the NLI . It was really bad plan .

Advantage of higher ground, built up fortifications, emplaced crew served weapons which are trained directly at the few narrow aproaches leading to the defended positions, land mines so on and so forth...............at least the India Army succeeded in its job.Of all,I expected you to know better.............well,actually you do know better but your over jealousy misplaced pride and xenofobic nationalism always seem to get the better of you whenever the topic is somehow,in any way related to India.
No one is trying to look down upon the achievements of your Army units here,we always give respect to our enemies whenevr and whereever it's due.I mean, just the other day, I was reading a book on Siachen conflict and there are testimonials of officers and men deployed there during those days and they only had the highest respect for your men!!Sadly I don't get to see the same show of courtesy from your side.
