67 held in Karachi security operation

As many as 67 people, including three women robbers, have been arrested within two days in Pakistan as part of an ongoing targetted operation launched in the port city of Karachi.

A total of 36 people, including the women robbers, were held by Pakistan Rangers Saturday alone during the operation, Xinhua reported.

The drive was launched early Friday against terrorists, target killers, kidnappers, and extortionists following a special cabinet meet, presided by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Wednesday.

It was approved to commence a targetted operation to address the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi, a business hub of the country.

On Saturday, Pakistan Rangers claimed to have arrested 29 people from the city's Orangi Town and seven from a plaza in Gulberg Town, pushing the tally of arrested people to 67 within two days, local media said.

Rangers along with police personnel Friday had conducted sudden raids at certain places in more than six areas and arrested 31 people including target killers, extortionists, drug dealers and kidnappers.

Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan earlier told media that 450 criminals had been identified in the intelligence reports and action would be taken against them and their aides.

Official reports say that dozens of leading businessmen have shifted their business and families to other countries due to insecurity in the city.

A joint investigation report by the intelligence agencies revealed that most of the killings take place as the result of political, religious and ethnic confrontation between various rival groups and mafias in the city.

Karachi operation bearing fruits: govt

* Nisar says several extortionists and target-killers associated with political parties have been arrested

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Sunday that the decision to approve a Rangers-led operation in Karachi has started to bear fruits.

Nisar said that a resolution on counter-terrorism strategies would be approved with consensus during the All-Parties Conference (APC). Speaking at a news conference, he said the APC would begin at 11am on Monday (today) and participates will be given a briefing on the country’s security matters by the army chief and ISI DG. The interior minister hoped that the conference would yield results. He said that the country should be hopeful regarding the APC. Asserting that the PML-N-led government had been working hard since assuming power, Nisar said, “This is not just a conference. It will chalk out a plan of action for the government to follow.”

“Political parties members will also get a chance to address the conference,” said the interior minister. Commenting on the situation in Karachi, Nisar said several extortionists and target killers had been arrested during targeted operations in the city. He added that those arrested had expressed their affiliations with political parties. “Operation was carried out in Malir, Frontier Colony, Site, Badr commercial, Clifton, Gizri and various other areas of Karachi,” the interior minister said while reading out from a report.

“It has been three days since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Karachi,” said Nisar, adding that the decision to approve a Rangers-led operation in the city had started to bear fruits. According to Nisar, Sindh inspector general of police (IGP) had been given one month to improve the performance of the police.

The interior minister said leaders of all the major parties in parliament would take part in the APC, which would be held at the Prime Minister’s House. “It is a matter of satisfaction that the leadership of all parties has agreed to attend the meeting. Four leaders were scheduled to go abroad, however, they have either postponed or cancelled their trips,” he said. The minister said that he had held discussions with the leaders and hoped that a comprehensive resolution would be passed at the APC. He appreciated the political leadership for its patriotism and extending cooperation to the government on issues of vital national importance.

Nisar said the Rangers-led operation in Karachi was going well, with very active mobile patrolling. He said Rangers had conducted 64 targeted raids, while police had undertaken 80 raids, arresting a large number of target killers and extortionists. Weapons, including automatic guns, rifles, pistols, bombs, repeaters and live ammunition, were recovered during the raids, he stated. The minister said it was appreciable that during the last four days the rate of heinous crimes, including target killings, in Karachi, had come down by one third.

bullshitt operations, most of the criminals have already escaped abroad, and police is the biggest criminal element in the city so why expect police to curb crimes?

operation is just a show piece no outcome will come out of it

.
Karachi is going through such a horrible mess that we can easily tell if these current operations under PMLN turn out to be fruitful. If they fail, they cant hide because media is on it

.
I couldn't get the point of announcing that the operation is going to be held against 450+ odd criminals only. Any sane criminal can guess whether he falls into that list or not and thus he will obviously flee before operation gets started. Its safe to say that only idiots from those 450+ criminals are still present in Karachi. So much for Karachi operation bearing fruits..

But Dawood Abrahim is till holed up in his Clifton mansion, protected by these very security agencies! :cheesy:

Just these 67 were responsible for all the crimes in Karachi. Now everything will be peaceful and people can walk without any fear till late mid night alone.

This is very un-constitutional. The government along with all the political parties could have done more better job by sending a message by e-mail + normal post + fax to all the sites where a raid would happen. But they do not have brains to use to plan an operation like this

they can't raid all the sites at once. After the first day, media was on it, there is nothing police, or rangers can do.
this is what happens in democracy.
criminals can run away all they want. Its better that they leave the country, its not free to put them in jail. it costs a lot of money.
As long as rangers and police is keep doing these raids, people who left the country won't try to come back.

Useless Karachi operation... By Masood - PakTribune

After countless meetings, press conferences, table talks and negotiations in the last few days on the Karachi unrest, are we back to square one? We have watched this negotiations drama so many times in the last few years that no one is hopeful of any change. The same police and Rangers, who are in fact part of the problem, have once again been asked to correct something they are neither capable of nor interested in as it may hurt their own interests. It is on record that thousands of political party workers and criminals have been inducted in the Karachi police force, becoming full partners in the ongoing lawlessness in the city. They work as a covering force for the criminals, extortionists, hired killers and kidnappers; they come into action only when a criminal gang deviates from the agreed share or goes for a deal with some other, more powerful force. Therefore, anyone who expects a 180-degree turnaround in police mentality and attitude is living in a fool's world. Most of the police force has no stakes in Karachi; the officers use their deputation period to earn as much as they can, of course, by unlawful means.

The Rangers are not that different from the police. They have been in the city for the last 20 years but what have Karachiites benefited from their presence? Criminal activities have increased manifold during the Rangers' presence. What is not happening in Karachi today? Land grabbing, extortion, target killings, kidnappings, street crimes, looting of buses, drugs and arms destitution, spreading of sectarian-based hate material and uncontrolled influx of illegal migrants from Afghanistan and other countries, all under the nose of the very force that is in Karachi at the cost of its taxpayers. Karachi's dynamics have changed in the last few decades; most of its suburbs have become no-go areas for the forces, now inhabited by religious extremists and the Taliban who indulge in criminal activities to raise funds for their counterparts fighting the Pakistan Army in the tribal areas.

I see no change in the situation unless the police is purged of criminal elements and is comprised only of those who have stakes in the city and intelligence agencies to track criminals. These officers should not look for a cut in deals, Rangers should be used as a reserve force only to strengthen police action if needed and all commercial interests of police and Rangers' officers in the city should be dried out. There needs to be a complete elimination of armed gangs who look towards political and religious parties for protection, the activities of religious/sectarian outfits should be dealt with firm determination and, most importantly, administrative control of the city should be handed over to its residents by holding local bodies municipal elections. There is no point in repeating that failure is not an option. The Karachi operation is bound to fail if the root causes of unrest and lawlessness are not dealt with an honest mindset.

We commend the Pakistani security forces on sending a stern message to these terrorists. The law and order must preside in order to restore peace in the city. Too many people have lost their lives to indiscriminate killings in the city, and the need of the hour is hold the repeat offenders responsible for their actions. We stand by the government of Pakistan and fully support their efforts to counter terrorism. We hope to see peace prevail throughout the city. Our forces are fighting the terrorists on both sides of the border, and we hope to remain unified in regards to our shared objectives in the region.

merey bhai MQM has no major bhatta khors, MQM's welfare trust KKF(khidmat khalq foundation) collects fitra once in a year only and that is standard donation, which has nothing got to do with bhatta

MQM has no central leadership which operates bhatta menace like aman committee, sunni tehreek, ANP etc

the major bhatta in the city is taken by police waalas even KMC takes bhatta which other wise scares people through using authority and we all know how sindhis control these sindh police and KMC etc, there is no merit in these organisations just like any other govt organisation
