Karachi handlers called attackers in Mumbai: witness to court

A Pakistani court conducting the trial of seven suspects in the Mumbai attack case was today told by a prosecution witness that ''handlers from Karachi'' had made calls giving directions to the terrorists who had launched the 26/11 strike.

Forensic expert Nauman Ashraf Bodla, appearing as the prosecution witness of the Federal Investigation Agency, told the court that the handlers called from three numbers and gave directions to the Mumbai attackers during the siege.

He, however, said the three numbers had been used for the purpose and had been issued on a fake identity in the name of Kharak Singh.

Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulifqar told PTI that Bodla had submitted a seven-page report to the court, informing it about the handlers giving direction to the attackers in Mumbai.

He said the defence also completed its arguments.

Defence counsel Khawaja Sultan Ahmed on his part argued that the 'handlers' Bodla had talked about had nothing to do with the accused.

The witness did not know the identity of the callers so what had they to do with his clients, he argued.

After the hearing, Khawaja Sultan told PTI that the court was also informed that three Indians, including two women, had made calls to people in Karachi, *** and Nepal during the attacks in Mumbai.

The hearing was adjourned till September 10.

However, the court is soon expected to announce its decision on the application of the prosecution to constitute a commission to send to India.

Commission to visit India

RAWALPINDI, Aug 27: An Anti-Terrorism Court-III (ATC-III) on Saturday allowed formation of judicial commission which will visit India to record the statements of different Indian officials who remained associated with 2008 Mumbai attack case.

ATC-III Judge Shahid Rafique announced the verdict after dence and prosecution counsel completed their arguments in the application of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in which it sought formation of a judicial commission to investigate the case.

During the last hearing, the FIA told the court that the Indian government had no objection to the visit of judicial commission which would record the statement of a woman magistrate who had recorded the confessional statement of Ajmal Kasab, the main accused in the case. The commission would also record statements of the witnesses.

There is a load of difference between finding out and establishing that as a fact in court..

Nope. Why would they? There is a conflict of interest. A few low level terrorist will be sacrificed, while LeT and others continue with their carnage.

The courts are prosecuting that means at least that much is proven in a court of law now.

The law will take its own course. But the evidence that will be presented in court will only be enough to pin the small time assister in the attack. The big guns will get away. GoI should not expect much from this. Unless there is bilateral understanding nothing can be done with the scums on both the sides.

One of the issues is that it requires special consideration since GoI is not sending the witnesses to Pakistan. Pakistan court MANDATES all witnesses to appear before court. In this case commissions are planning to fly to India and get sworn statements. If somebody screws it up, defence would argue mistrial.

GoI should send all the witnesses to Pakistan in Interpol custody and be done with it.

Another issue is that with such slow trials, judges would retire new guys would come in, politicians would retire... It will go on for like 10 years maybe.
