Kannada scholar Dr Malleshappa M Kalburgi was shot dead by two unidentified men on Sunday, 30 August, at his home in Dharwad district, 430km north of Karnataka capital Bengaluru.

Kalburgi, the former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi, was shot at his Kalyan Nagar residence at 8:40am, police said. He was rushed to the District Civil Hospital, where he breathed his last.

The attackers knocked on the door and when opened, they shot Kalburgi on the forehead and chest at a close range while he was speaking on mobile phone, reports said.

His daughter Rupadarshi stated that when she came out hearing the gunshot, she found him lying in a pool of blood.

He had recently requested the police to withdraw armed guards deployed at his house. The police are looking into the role of Hindutva terror outfits in the incident as several local saffron fronts had reportedly threatened him over his remarks on idol worship.

The reputed scholar, who was a member of the Advisory Board to the Kannada Sahitya Academy, was conferred with the National Sahitya Akademi Award in 2006 for his collection of research articles titled "Marga 4".

Kalburgi, who was born in Yaragal village in Vijayapura district in 1938, had also won State Sahitya Akademi Award, Basava Puraskara, Nrupatunga Award, Pampa Award and Yakshagana Award.

Kalburgi was a close friend of Jnanpith award-winning litterateur, the late UR Ananthamurthy, who was a staunch opposer of BJP's right-wing politics. In August 2014, when Ananthamurthy died, alleged members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the right-wing Hindu Jagarana Vedike were booked by the police for bursting crackers to mark his death.

Co-convenor of the Bajrang Dal's Bantwal cell, Bhuvith Shetty, triggered a controversy on Sunday by welcoming the assassination of scholar MM Kalburgi who was shot dead at his house in Dharwad.

"Then it was UR Ananthamurthy and now MM Kalburgi. Mock Hinduism and die dogs (sic.) death. And dear KS Bhagwan you are next," Shetty tweeted.

Kalburgi, 77, was shot in the head from close range when he opened the door of his house in Kalyan Nagar suburb. He was controversial for his independent views on social and religious matters.

Did this asshole ask people to urinate on Hindu Gods and Goddesses? I guess a lot of other seculars will keep their mouth shut hereafter.
Did he really say that?

Whatever he might have said on religious issues, one should never take the path of violence...Its a dangerous path to tread....we have a live example of Pakistan in front of us which has gone to gutters supporting extremism against kafirs...kannadigas are docile and gentle... I don't know why they are showing signs of extremism.

1. He did say that.

2. Hinduism has a long history of being abused, islam has a long history of Abusing others. So you cannot compare the two.

3. Its about time Hindus gained the confidence to ask the abusers to Shut up in clear terms. After all, India does not provide absolute free speech.

I do not know if he was killed for that or if some creditor of his killed him off. Atheists are loose with other people's money too. It is just that I do not feel sorry he was killed.

I am not saying to put up with insulting remarks against Hindu gods...but we should not choose the path of violence.
We are proud that our country is not like Pakistan...we are in general soft people...we should not take to killings and murders...once degenerated it is difficult to normalize the situation...I am not sure the reason behind his killing but by the looks of it,it seems some Hindu extremist gundas have killed him..never condone violence against people simply because they have a different view from ours(even if those views are insulting to us sometimes).

Indian constitution has not yet made killing and murder legal, so your fears are unfounded. We can worry about this, once evil Hindus decide to do that, OK ?

I require you to provide evidence that "Hindu extremist gundas" have killed this man, or you need to publicly apologize for such a bigoted views and vile comment.

I do not take kindly to racist and bigots, so you will understand my anger towards you.

Such things required proof, cheap slander is free
