New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi, arguably one of India's more controversial politicians, has been granted bail and may leave Delhi's Tihar Jail today. The fact that Mr Kalmadi was imprisoned on charges of corruption has apparently not diminished his chances of re-claiming his job as President of the Indian Olympic Association or IOA. "It's upto him to decide if he wants to return as President. No one complained against Mr Kalmadi in meetings," said Tarlochan Singh, the Vice-President of the IOA. "People have faith in Kalmadi,":hitwall::hitwall: he added. A cascade of angry tweets prompted by Mr Kalmadi's bail suggests not everyone agrees with that vote of confidence. When Mr Kalmadi was arrested, Vijay Kumar Malhotra took over as acting president. The process of impeachment of the IOA president is a complicated one. The association will hold its next election in November.

Mr Kalmadi, an MP from Pune, was granted bail by the Delhi High Court this morning. He was arrested in April last year for alleged corruption - as chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Commonwealth Games, Mr Kalmadi allegedly sanctioned an inflated contract worth 141 crores for timing equipment and scoreboards to a Swiss firm, 90 crores more than what should have been paid, according to investigators. Mr Kalmadi's close aide, VK Verma, arrested in the same case has also been allowed to leave prison today. The charges against Mr Kalmadi include conspiracy, forgery, misconduct and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He has been suspended by his party, the Congress.

On October 11, 2008, in Pune, Kalmadi was elected president of the Indian Olympic Association for the fourth time. It was a sub-set of the IOA that organized the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010. They were internationally reported for poor organization; within the country, the event made headlines for apparently ubiquitous graft.

As chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr Kalmadi repeatedly defended busting the budget, and promised India a world-class event. Sources close to him say that he plans to keep himself very busy over the next few months. He intends, allegedly, to write a book about the Commonwealth Games, and will also try to play a lead role in the municipal elections in his hometown of Pune, which has the country's second-largest municipal corporation after Mumbai.

PEOPLE SAYS OURS IS A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY AND PEOPLE HERE ENJOYS THE FREEDOM WHICH OTHERS CANNOT, YES FREEDOM TO DESTROY PUBLIC MONEY, FREEDOM TO PI$$ AND $HIT IN PUBLIC, FREEDOM FOR OUR POLITICIAN TO RAP ANY KIND OF SCAM AND THEN WALK AWAY FREE..:hitwall:

.
is this some kind of a joke :hitwall:, how can they give that b***ard bail , what next ??? even raja would get bail:fie: .

Its very interesting that Kalmadi have handled only Rs. 1700 crore and even returned few hundred croes out of it. That means he have utilised that arond 1400 crore for organising a sucesful CWG with awesome opening ceromony.

But people are blaming kalmadi for everthing or he is the biggest villain of all.

On the other hand most of the bad incident (like underconstruction bridge collaspe) was build by Delhi govt. central govt.

In short the failers are all of Delhi govt. or central govt. if one looked into point wise point/incedent by incident.

Just take example:

1. Stadium was not completed in time JLN stadium (Responcibility of UD Ministry central govt.)

2. Under construction briddge collasped (Responcibility of UD Ministry central govt. because DDA comes under it)

3. 1 Bed broken in games village (Responcibility of UD Ministry central govt. because DDA comes under it)

4. Games village was not ready (Responcibility of UD Ministry central govt. because DDA comes under it)

5. Airport Metro was not ready (Responcibility of UD Ministry central govt. / Reliance Infra of Anil Ambani)

Delhi govt which have failed in his responcibilties and mishandled and done big corruption no body is saying anything to chief minsiter shiela dikshit :hitwall:

Delhi govt. mishandled Rs. 30,000 croes but people are targeting a small fish Kalmadi who have handled Rs. 1400 croes only.
:hitwall: :hitwall:

That the biggest root cause of the curroption people avoid big criminals and that's the power of media that they can make a villain into a hero or hero into a villain :hitwall::hitwall:

I hope he gets bitten by a shark everyday.

I don't know if you guys understand this, but bail is the right of any accused, until the case is proved in court. He is an accused, and hasn't been convicted yet. He has every right to be on bail, unless there is a legitimate danger of him fleeing the country. Being granted bail doesn't mean he is innocent, the case will go on in the court. And once he is found guilty, he will be awarded (I hope) a stiff, long sentence. There will be no bail then.

But as of now, he is only an accused. You can't keep anyone in jail indefinitely until he has been proved guilty. That is the accepted practice in any country in the world with a proper justice system. As the supreme court itself has said, for an accused, "bail is the norm and jail is the exception".

The only problem in India is that court cases drag on for years, and these people walk free all that time. Hopefully this time there will be a fast verdict. So if you want to complain about anything, complain about the fact that it takes so long to get justice in India. But don't bemoan the fact that an accused cannot be kept in prison before he is found guilty by a court of law. It is everyonne's fundamental right to be free unless criminal charges have been proved against you - true for me, true for you, true for kalmadi - we cannot and should not be imprisoned until charges against us are proven.
