Saudi Arabia is planning to launch the country’s project on renewable energy, according to a statement made by King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE).
The project, entitled “Atlas of the Sources of Renewable Energy in Saudi Arabia,” is set to be one of the landmark projects implemented by the city with the participation of local and international expertise.
Hashim bin Abdullah Yamani, KACARE president, and Mohammed I. Al-Suwaiyel, president of King Abdul Aziz Center of Science and Technology (KACST) that will address the inauguration ceremony of the project.
The national project aims to attract local and foreign investments in the field of renewable energy by harnessing the potential that abounds in the Kingdom in the field of solar, thermal and wind energy.
The project draws the profile for the future of clean energy in the Kingdom and provides technical data and information of renewable energy sources in the various regions of the Kingdom.
Speakers at the launching ceremony, which will take place on Dec. 18, will highlight the major features of the atlas project and its strategic trends in serving the renewable energy sector in the Kingdom.
In his previous statement, Yamani said that Saudi Arabia is determined to build an energy system based entirely on the latest technologies available that have been tried and tested in terms of environmental safety and security standards.
He estimated the total cost of the program at $140 billion by 2030, adding that 60 percent of the entire atomic industry would be nationalized in due course.
He added that 18 percent of the renewable energy industry in the Kingdom is based on technical and economic studies prepared by KACARE.
This month, the program will be hosting two sessions discussing the technical aspects of the project as well as its uses and how to utilize it for all stakeholders.
The atlas project is the result of cooperation between KACARE as well as local and international expertise, including KACST, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and the Technical and Vocational Training Corp. and other organizations.
