Kabul attack: Huge blast rocks diplomatic district

Huge blast rips through the heart of Afghan capital, in an area close to many government offices and foreign embassies.

A suicide car bomb attack in the heart of Kabul's diplomatic district has killed at least 19 people and wounded hundreds, according to officials, in a powerful blast described as "one of the biggest" to have hit the Afghan capital.

Sources said the explosion on Wednesday took place near Zanbaq square, in Kabul's 10th district, a highly secure area close to many government offices and foreign embassies.

Afghanistan's health ministry confirmed to Al Jazeera that at least 19 people were killed and 390 wounded in the attack.

The death toll was expected to rise. Local media reported that at least 50 people were killed in the attack, citing anonymous sources.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Both the Taliban and ISIL have previously staged large-scale attacks in Kabul

The explosion also shattered windows at the Japanese embassy. "Two Japanese embassy staffers were mildly injured, suffering cuts", a foreign ministry official in Tokyo told AFP.

Witnesses described dozens of cars choking the roads as wounded survivors and panicked schoolgirls sought safety, with men and woman struggling to get through security checkpoints to search for loved ones.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the attack came as the resurgent Taliban are stepping up their annual “spring offensive”.

Since the start of Ramadan, a holy month for the Muslims, a new wave of terrorism has started in Afghanistan.

The Islamic State group has also claimed responsibility for several recent bombings in the Afghan capital, including a powerful blast targeting an armoured NATO convoy that killed at least eight people and wounded 28 on May 3.

Wednesday's attack underscores spiralling insecurity in Afghanistan, where Afghan forces beset by soaring casualties and desertions are struggling to beat back the insurgents. More than one third of the country is outside government control.

Afghan troops are backed by US and NATO forces, and the Pentagon has reportedly asked the White House to send thousands more troops to the country to break the deadlocked fight against the Taliban.

US troops in Afghanistan number about 8,400 today, and there are another 5,000 from NATO allies, who also mainly serve in an advisory capacity -- a far cry from the US presence of more than 100,000 six years ago.

Pentagon chief Jim Mattis has warned of "another tough year" for both foreign troops and local forces in Afghanistan.

The blast was the latest in a long line of attacks in Kabul. The province surrounding the capital had the highest number of casualties in the first three months of 2017 thanks to multiple attacks in the city, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

Why Modi is getting over excited on this. Clearly Afghan Taliban are not involved as they have rejected this terrorist act, which only leave ISIS as the prime suspect and we all know who is behind ISIS and who brought them in Afghanistan. Ajeet Doval trips to Iraq are well known.

Just look into your own backyard, your support of tons of terrorist organizations have hurt Pakistan more than anyone else. Why will India do the same when we have a living example next door.
