PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly adopted a landmark piece of legislation on Thursday, barring a bride’s family members, relatives and outsiders from making dowry payments to the groom and his family.

The law also restricts the maximum value of gifts given to the bride by her parents, family members or any other person to Rs10,000. It is now illegal for anyone from the groom’s family or anyone on their behalf to ask or force the bride’s family for dowry. If they still do, they shall be liable to a two-month prison term and a fine of Rs300,000 or both.

The law titled, ‘the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dowry, Bridal Gift and Marriage Functions Restriction Act, 2017,’ states that the total expenditures on marriages, including on baarats or valimas shall not exceed Rs75,000 and other ceremonies, including nikah, baraat or valima shall be concluded before 10pm.

Similarly, the law restricts the valima to a one-dish banquet of rice, gravy and sweets. It also states that a person or family celebrating the nikah or baraat or organising the marriage ceremony of other person shall not serve or allow anyone to meals or other edibles, excluding beverages, to people participating in the ceremony.

Under the law, anyone who contravenes or fails to comply with any provision of this law shall be liable to pay a fine not less than Rs200,000 and an imprisonment term not exceeding two months.

The bill, tabled by the Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) Rashda Riffat, was unanimously adopted by the house.

Services of more than 3,000 employees of the health and irrigation departments were regularised after the adoption of two separate laws tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sardar Fakhar Azam Khan.

The assembly also adopted a resolution asking the provincial government to include chapters on the life of celebrated humanitarian and charity founder Abdul Sattar Edhi in textbooks taught in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

If family of bride groom find nothing wrong in it police could do squat..
also what about share of property given to daughter, that spring raised already? if you dont enforce that, your daughter is a loser... everything go to son.

.
Very good law. Also want the authorities enforcing this law now.

It has become a tradition & flaunt of status..
These things are enforced under the watch of both sides..

Good point. As long as it is registered solely on the girl's name beforehand.

Sorry to say this, but desi guys suck when it comes to standing up to their parents and family for what is wrong.

So don't depend on them doing the right thing by your daughter. Protect her financially.

we got all these laws... how do you implement them? are you going to send police to every marriage? check bank transaction of parents?
we had ban on multi dishes during marriage feasts in the past and according to law you could serve only one dish and trust me we at least implemented it in our province though the people were uneasy due to the law they wanted to lift ban on multi dishes and many even secretly served more than one but guess what police raids made their life hell and then even the rich ones were forced to cut on dishes and limit to one only.

Hearing one good thing after another about KP off late.

A far cry from a few years ago when Peshawar used to be in the news for all the wrong reasons.

What has brought about this shift?

Safe to say it seems the most progressive and proactive part of Pakistan currently.

if it works then fine...
I wont go to a single dish marriage.. food is the only reason I go to attend marriage... :)

also what about share of property given to daughter,

Islam have a well defined LAW regarding this. which is also adopted by Pakistani Constitution.

IF a Person (Father/guardian of family) have

1 wife
1 daughter
1 son.
all alive.

Property will be distributed as 1/8 to wife, 7/12 to son, 7/24 to daughter.
Daughter get's half of what Son gets. that's because Daughter also get share from the property of her Husband. which bring's her share to as par with Son's share.

In further cases distribution will be like as discussed in the OP of this link.

Many (Non-KPian's) will disagree but it's IK and his vision.

if daughter does not get married? then what?
also if you give son and daughter equal share, they will still end up having same after marriage(when both get married)... still parity... much better.

Sorry for my political ignorance in Pakistani affairs (indeed Indian as well when it comes to regional politics) but is Imran's party in power there?

If so he is doing a good job. The doctor thing. The dowry thing. Some sweeper thing we read about. The richest municipal corporation by taxes?

What then is the reason for the widespread disenchantment with such a hugely popular Pakistan towering great?

making a law about is a good step. however, I wonder how are they going to implement said law. If there is an understanding between the two families, how are they going to punish them. Furthermore, family matters are considered sensitive here and these things are considered private.

but, this is a step in the right direction and a very commendable legislation from KP
