Tsunami could ‘wipe out’ Karachi – The Express Tribune

KARACHI: Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, home to around 18 million people, could be “wiped out” by a tsunami, officials said Wednesday after a drill simulating a major earthquake in the Indian Ocean.

The test, and one carried out a day earlier simulating another quake off Indonesia, were designed to check an early-warning system set up after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 230,000 people.

The exercise organised by the United Nations was based on a hypothetical 9.0 magnitude quake in the Makran Trench, where the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, off the coast of Pakistan.

“This would create waves of 0.9 to seven metres high that could reach Karachi in one and a half hours,” Tauseef Alam, the chief meteorologist who was supervising the tests, told AFP.

“This could wipe out the city as the waves would be immensely powerful.”

Karachi was hit by a tsunami in 1945 that killed at least 4,000 people, Alam said.

A repeat would likely have a devastating effect on Pakistan nationally, since Karachi, the country’s main port, accounts for around 42 per cent of national GDP.

“The city is vulnerable because there is a chance of another tsunami in the same vicinity but we don’t know when,” Alam said.

In the event of a tsunami, real-time data would be sent to the Met Office in Karachi from Indonesian, Australian and Indian centres.

An alarm would sound when an alert was issued and the team would start disseminating the data to around a dozen disaster management departments.

“Our goal is to ensure the timely and effective notification of tsunamis, to educate communities at risk about safety preparedness and to improve our overall coordination,” Alam said.

But it is not clear whether Karachi has a tsunami evacuation plan, or whether one would even be feasible in the chaotic, sprawling city.

“We will evaluate what works well, where improvements are needed, make necessary changes and continue to practice,” the meteorologist said.

Scary stuff. Hope GOP will take some measures to protect Karachi.

. . . . . .
They Wont do anything, Its NOT Their JOB, Their JOB is eat Pakistan and ABUSE PAK Military That's it

Here you go, Sir:

Okay, so this is a complex one to answer. the reasons are as follows:

When an underwater quake "sea quake" will occur the USGS and other monitoring stations will submit seismic data to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs : OCHA will then transfer the data on GDACS: Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System - which can be accessed by host nations, disaster managers etc. You can see GDACS live here: Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System

Then there is a very short period of time after the sea quake, that the level of emergency would be assessed, UN GDACS calculates risk to life and property and color codes this based on the reported death and displaced and the likelyhood of impact on population. Red = 1000 or more people killed or 800000 or more people displaced. Orange = 100 or more people killed or 80000 or more displaced.

This information is shared at national host nation level with all relevant stakeholders. The Government would then activate the National Disaster Management plan see bellow and classify the level of emergency:

Emergency classifications fall into 3 levels:

Level 1. Localized emergency events for example, small scale fire, landslides, flood, canal or sub canal breach, low level epidemics etc dealt by DDMA at district level. The DDMA is capable of handling the situation on its own. Emergency may be declared by District Nazim. Actions and responsibilities are as under:-

Level 2. Emergency/disaster which overwhelms the capacity of the district disaster management authority to manage the situation, DDMA can request for assistance to the PDMC through PDMA. In this situation an emergency is declared by the Chief Executive of the Province. Actions and responsibilities are as under:-

Level 3. In case emergency/disaster is beyond the capacity of provincial/regional government national emergency is declared by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Appeal may be launched internationally for the assistance. Actions and responsibilities are as under:-

---------------------------------------------------------

So as you can see it would be an escalating level of response, depending on the probability of loss to life and property, evacuation for a city with a population of 23.5 Million and some of the most densely populated areas in the world would be a nightmare.

This would all depend on how much time was available to alert the population and encourage a smooth evacuation without causing widespread panic. Bellow is a simulated model of the 2004 Tsunami just to give you an idea of the limitation of time when it comes to tsunami response.

In closing, Allah na karey key Tsunami aye!

This report is just to scare people. Even if a tsunami hits karachi it won't wipe out an entire city. That's only possible if there are some powerful aftershocks in Karachi.

We have Nuclear power plants on the coast line they can cause very serious damage may be that's what the un experts meant in their assessment.

I spent few years in Karachi in recent past and have been a frequent visitor. God forbid, if there is a Tsunami, nuclear reactors will be your secondary concern. There are just so much unplanned residential areas. If water reaches even 1 KM inland, hundreds of thousands will be immediately affected. Apart from small and disappearing patches of mangroves etc I don't recall any man made barriers designed to protect the city. Hope I am wrong and the situation has changed.

exactly this and a hundred other reasons i take UN opinion seriously my reply was to a member who rubbished the claims. A city of 200 million and more than half living in slums loss of life and property will be irreparable if God forbid worst happens

.
frankly if it were to happen, do you think we Pakistanis act smart enough to take precautionary measures??
Let me direct you to the FLOOD situation in the whole damn country because pea-brained government (PPP and PMLN) both have paid no heed towards building the dams to control this annual fiasco! What about KalaBagh Dam and several other projects that are rotting in the back burner?

This report, if serves the purpose, is a job well done!
