In retaliation for two cyber attacks undertaken against Jordanian government websites in the month of June, a group of Jordanian hackers took it upon themselves to take revenge and deface an Iranian government website last Friday. The Iranian website's homepage was replaced by a picture of a Jordanian military officer, with the words "[expletive] IRAN" plastered undeath numerous times.
The style and aim of this most recent cyberattack resembles a similar one befalling Jordan just last week, where a hacker from Iran took down the website for the Jordanian Department of Taxes and Income, writing "[expletive] all Arabs and you!" alongside a symbol of ancient Persia and similar deragatory comments.
Earlier this month, state-run Jordanian media outlet "Petra" was attacked by hackers based in Iran, who posted a false news story about a Saudi prince endorsing a particular candidate in the upcoming American presidential elections. The posting was quickly taken down, but not before the false claim spread to numerous media outlets and social media websites.
Its estimated that Gulf countries alone lose $1B dollars annually as a result of cyber attacks, which have steadily been on the rise in recent years. Many of these attacks, though varying in severity and effectiveness, originate from Iran.
