Jordan will “take measures” to protect its interests if the Syrian refugee crisis is not resolved, King Abdullah II said on Sunday in a speech to parliament.

The monarch said that the influx of Syrian refugees is draining Jordan’s resources and called for international assistance to deal with the problem.

“Jordan currently hosts around 600,000 Syrian refugees -- an issue that depletes our already limited resources and puts enormous pressure on our infrastructure,” the king said.

“If the international community does not move quickly to help us shoulder the burdens of the Syrian crisis... Jordan is able to take measures to protect the interests of our people and country,” he added without elaborating.

King Abdullah II also said that since the start of the Syrian conflict, Jordan has been supporting a political solution that would preserve the war-hit country's unity and territorial integrity, as well security in the region.

The U.N. refugee agency says there are 541,025 registered Syrian refugees in Jordan, including more than 100,000 in the northern desert Zaatari camp near the border, according to Agence France-Presse.

Jordan has repeatedly called for more international aid and says that the growing refugee influx has placed a huge burden on its water and power supplies as well as housing and education.

On Thursday, Amnesty International urged world support to help Jordan and other countries hosting Syrian refugees end border restrictions on those fleeing the conflict, AFP reported.

I just can't understand why the GCC don't share Syrian refugees responsibility with Jordan. The help has been offered was so little considering the huge numbers of refugees and the limited resources available as well as the harsh consequences on citizens. In my city, the streets are jammed, houses rents have been tripled, gov lift subsidy on most services and goods as it couldn't afford it with the existence of refugees. There is pressure on infrastructure and all other services including education and health care. Thousands of Jordanians can't find jobs or lost them as Syrians work for less salary and longer hours.

No offence, but even few dogs would bite the hand that helped and fed them. We have been the only port to import goods to Iraq since Iraq-Iran war, we defied the UN resolutions and passed them to Iraq. We stood with Iraq in 1st and 2nd gulf wars and paid for it. We received more than 1.5 million Iraqis and didn't complain, and there are 350 k of them as we speak in Jordan. We trained your police and army and grant you hundreds of M-113, IFVs and APCs. And yet you whine over 10 thousand barrels of oil you sell us for $90 pb?
Blowback...

Well, yes, we are sharing Syrians their pain in an attempt to alleviate it, that's a noble thing to do. But on you side, the real blowback of your country terrorism is:

Imagine a poor country like ours had to support 5 million Afhans that not only wrecked havoc on economy, but peace, terrorism and social fabric with their extremism, drugs, guns and bs. If it were upto me I'd kick them all out. And you can see the after effects on us now. You guys should learn from history.

I do agree you share pain, but its pain that you yourselves have chosen to inflict on the Syrian people (and on yourselves), and now you suffer the consequences of supporting terrorism and displacing innocent people.

It's not like this, 5 million Afghanis form about 3% of the total population of Pakistan while more than 1 million Syrians form fifth of Jordanian population. In other words, you need to have about 35 million refugees to have the same effects on us.

We say whatever we want in our country, you don't like it, you get out.

You are changing the facts. Yours is called terrorism but ours is called defending innocent people and giving them the means to protect themselves.

Was cannibalism part of the self-defence course? Do you get diploma in that course, once you finish eating a heart, liver and kidneys or just on of them?

You are not doing anything except inflicting pain and terrorism on people.

You need to realize our population wasnt 180 million then it was . Our economy wasnt strong, we werent provided aid that should have been provided. Plus these Afghanis stick to urban centres and then create gangs and the bs that follows. Be vary of helping others.

You mean continue supporting heart-eating takfiris that are displacing poor and innocent people, while at the same time suffer yourselves and cope with larger influx of refugees.
Good plan.

The good plan is that we can't afford hosting the increasing numbers of refugees and yet create a no fly zone over Southern Syria and secure it then move refugees there. That's what this thread is about.

For a no-fly zone you have to declare war and do bombings against air defence targets. Prepared to do that?
Im not sure how that will help with the refugee problem
