AMMAN, Jordan - A Jordanian prosecutor says eight pro-reform activists have been charged with opposing the regime, slandering the royal family and violating security.

The arrests reflected tight security in Jordan, scene of months of relatively low-key demonstrations to demand liberalization of the monarchy.

A state security court prosecutor says the men were arrested Saturday, a day after protests in Amman, the capital, and in the south.

The prosecutor spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

He said the protests turned violent after the activists chanted slogans against the regime and insulted King Abdullah II.

Last March, security forces arrested two dozen activists during anti-government protests, in which they allegedly chanted slogans against the royal family. The king pardoned them, and they were released in April.

Same happened in UAE. The same would happen in any desert kingdom. It's the height of irony when the supporters of these desert kings rum amok with praise and blind support for all actions of their kings, even if they are completely un Islamic.

5000 demonstrations were staged out in Jordan in the last 1.5 year, not a single casualty was recorded, which haven't ever happened even in the west. Policemen always accompanied the protesters to protect them from angry pro-government people. Water and fresh juice were distributed to protesters by police in noon times. However, they have crossed the line this time parading around streets carrying machine guns, shooting in the air and slandering the king's wife and the king with the most base words. Slandering an ordinary citizen in private or in public would get you to jail, so, why is it strange to file a suit case when it comes to the king and his family?

both can't be compared....they have a President you have a KING......

I have no interest in Assad or your regime...... I just dont like hypocrisy ... Countries with dictators supporting democracy in Syria.... A new afghanistan in making.

the best thing that could happen is the dismantling of all the puppet and artificial states in the ME including irak, syria, jordan, saudi arabia etc i.e. all teh "arab" states and the their replacement by a single state representing all the people there....

Excuse me, but are you stupid. How many time do we have to clarify that NO Arab country asked for democracy in Syria. It was always regime change & Assads out, NOT democracy.

That's not what the slaves of the west called "S"NC say or the those terrorists say and those rat defectors who run outside the country and defect like cowards... they say they want democracy......

LOL opposing Assad because the 'muslims' there need democracy, but opposing the protestors in one's own country even if they protested against the King.
