MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin confirmed the talks on Twitter.
“First call! India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj received her first congratulatory call from US Secretary of State John Kerry. Re-energising Relations! External Affairs Minister and John Kerry discuss re-energising the strategic partnership in first talk,” he tweeted.
Last week, Kerry had said that friendship with India is absolutely vital and US is ready to work closely with Narendra Modi-led new government to strengthen strategic ties and security.
“The United States stands ready to work closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the new government to promote shared prosperity and strengthen our security. The friendship between the world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy is absolutely vital and the United States is deeply invested in our strategic relationship. We look forward to strengthening our partnership based on common values, shared democratic traditions and the binding ties between our peoples,” Kerry said.
Earlier, US President Barack Obama had congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the strategic partnership between the two nations.
