he Delhi Police will file a chargesheet today against ten people, including student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, in a sedition case that involved that use of "anti-national slogans" by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students in February 2016.
Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested that year for allegedly organising an event in the JNU campus against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru. There was outrage when allegations were made that "anti-national slogans" had been raised.
The opposition slammed the police for "working at the behest of the ruling BJP".
A special cell of the Delhi Police has been investigating the case. The chargesheet will be filed at the Patiala House Court.
"The case is in stage of finalisation," Delhi Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik said last week. "The investigation was complex as the team also had to visit other states for taking statements."
The arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, a former president of the JNU Students' Union, catapulted him to national fame and resulted in country-wide protests.
A QUICK RECAP: A chargesheet will be filed today at Delhi's Patiala House Court against Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and eight others in a the JNU sedition case, which dates back to 2016. Delhi's police commissioner said the investigation was "complex" as "team...had to visit other states for taking statements".
