Mukesh Ambani said that his group's digital arm Jio is developing a homegrown 5G.

Mumbai:
Reliance Group Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Wednesday announced that his group's digital arm Jio has been developing a homegrown 5G telecom solution.

"Jio has designed and developed a complete 5G solution from scratch. It will be ready for trials as soon as 5G spectrum is available and can be ready for field deployment next year," Mr Ambani said at Reliance Industries' annual general meeting.

Jio's global-scale 4G and fibre network is powered by several core software technologies and components.

"It is this capability and know-how that positions Jio on the cutting edge of another exciting frontier 5G," he said.

Jio Platforms, with over 20 startup partners, has built world-class capabilities in technologies such as 4G, 5G, Cloud computing, Devices and OS, Big Data, AI, AR/VR, Blockchain, Natural Language Understanding and Computer Vision, he said.

"Using these technologies, we can create compelling solutions across multiple industry verticals like media, financial services, new commerce, education, healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, smart manufacturing & smart mobility," he said, adding Jio Platforms is conceived with vision of developing original, captive intellectual property, using which, we can demonstrate transformative power of technology across multiple ecosystems first in India, and then rest of world.

In the next three years, Jio will connect half a billion mobile customers, a billion smart sensors and 50 million home and business establishments, Mr Ambani said.

Anyone can implement basic elements of 5G in a lab. These are open standards that are published on the internet. Key point is if your implementation is good enough for a commercial deployment? Not to mention the hardware it is running on. To the best of my knowledge there is no Indian origin manufacturer of commercial telco grade hardware.

That will only be answered if/when Jio goes online with its own solution. Right now its just hot air, but good effort nonetheless if they manage to invest and get it running.

Reliance Jio doesn't have a single Chinese component, Mukesh Ambani tells Donald Trump

Reliance Industries (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani told US president Donald Trump, who was on his maiden visit to India earlier this month, that Reliance Jio is the only network in the world that doesn't use a single Chinese equipment.

"You’re doing 4G. Are you going to do 5G too?," Trump had asked Ambani during a discusion with Indian CEOs, according to a transcript released by the White House. To which, Ambani replied: "We’re going to do 5G. We’re the only network in the world that doesn’t have a single Chinese component."

Most likely paid nokia or others to produce 5g equipment. Just slapped their sticker on it. Nothing wrong in outsourcing development, common practice. Jio just needs to be truthful.
