Jharkhand teacher asks students to learn national anthems of Pakistan, Bangladesh; kicks up row

Several parents had objected to the task, which was shared by the teacher in East Singhbhum district with YouTube links of the anthems in a school WhatsApp group.

Jamshedpur: A controversy has erupted after a teacher at a private school in Jharkhand allegedly asked kindergarten students to memorise the national anthems of Pakistan and Bangladesh, prompting the administration to launch a probe amid accusations that she had an "anti-national mindset", an official said on Sunday.

Several parents had objected to the task, which was shared by the teacher in East Singhbhum district with YouTube links of the anthems in a school WhatsApp group for UKG and LKG students last week during online classes being held due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The matter was also highlighted on Twitter by BJP spokesperson Kunal Sarangi, following which the district administration constituted a two-member team to conduct a probe and submit its report in 24 hours, District Education Officer Shivendra Kumar said.

Authorities at the Ghatshila school in East Singhbhum had cancelled the task following protests.

"Deputy Commissioner Ravi Shankar Shukla has directed a probe into the matter which will be conducted by a two- member team led by Regional Education Officer Keshav Prasad," the DEO said.

In a press statement, the BJP's state unit general secretary, Aditya Sahu, said, "The future of the children is dark and unsecured in such private schools, which ask children to learn Pakistan and Bangladesh anthems for homework."

A childs mind is very delicate and it develops according to the culture inculcated into the child. Such homework reflects the anti-national mindset, Sahu added.

well my indian school forced me to learn/sing indian national anthem in school...
and now you might say don't study in an indian school.... but the school was indian only in name... it was an international school....

Honestly, BD has a magnificent and poignant national anthem....stirs the heart. I would be in favour of it being taught at school in India at some juncture in the curriculum, simply to get more idea of depth of Tagore's expansive body of work beyond political borders.

I like the Pakistani anthem aesthetically too (personally), but political realities means there's going to be major trouble if a school pushes that.

Teacher should have tasked just BD anthem here if you ask me...as part of Tagore study.

Some BJP thug would likely have had issue with that anyway, sad.

Anthems are just songs, the ones for Bangladesh and India were written by the same Nobel Prize winner poet Rabindranath Tagore. Like the legions of Bengalis of talent, his family traced their ancestry to the interior of what is now Bangladesh. We gave the rest of India the lineage of people like Tagore, Amartya Sen and countless others (including our resident great @Joe Shearer dada no less). And Indians call us termites.

I know and can sing all these anthems (including that of Pakistan) at least partly. Does not mean I owe my allegiance to any country if I sing it. That honor goes to the citizens of the respective countries.
