Jayalalithaa to boycott Modi's swearing-in ceremony: TV reports

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi, according to TV reports.

Jayalalithaa may not even send any representative for the ceremony, the reports quoting sources say.

The Tamill Nadu chief minister had earlier expressed dismay over Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi's invite to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for his May 26 swearing-in.

While the sentiments of Tamils living in India and elsewhere towards the Sri Lankan Tamils were known, a change of regime at the Centre "in no way alters the already existing strained relations between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka", she had said in a statement.

The AIADMK supremo, a strident critic of the Rajapaksa administration, had said Modi could have avoided the 'ill-advised' move of inviting the head of the island republic, especially with regard to the Centre-state relations.

Jaya should have understood this wasn't a personal invitation for Dialog, it was an invitation for SAARC alltogether

Bina baat ke nakhre...apne paas rakh re. Sick n tired of such politicians who try to influence our foreign policy for their political ambitions.

Good move by Modi. No need to mix external politics with the internal one.

India's foreign policy - in regard with SL ,should include the interest of the people of TN

India's foreign policy vis a vis Pakistan doesn't depend on how they treats Hindus or Sikhs in their land...does it ? why ? bcz its about their citizens. At max wht India can and should do is raise some voice when any atrocity takes place in SL...nothing more than that. Regardless of what your stature is, you can interfere into working of a nation to a certain limit...not beyond that. When our senseless criticism (to certain extent) about SL will begin to hurt our interests then we should put a full stop to that. That's what I expect Modi to do. However, arrests of Tamil Fisherman should be actively taken up with Lankan officials and work on that front will continue to be done in future.

Interest of nation comes first. It's not as if Modi has put forth a red carpet welcome specifically for SL president. He is just one among the invitees.

not at the expense of TN interest, SL or TN , India has a choice , with the same choice extended to TN. .. boycott

this whole SARC leaders invitation saga is a mess , with an egg in the face of .........

NCP thing is an Internal issue of Sri Lanka. All the SAARC learers were invited along with Rajapaksa. So no need to make a mountain of a molehill.

Invitation to NPC CM was Rajapaksa masterstroke to defuse the backlash in TN and you failed to grasp the reasons why the CM declined the invitation.

In a communiqué to the External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, the Chief Minister has said that he is unable to accept the government's "warm welcome" as the gesture would indicate that the relations between the government and the Northern Province are harmonious

Wigneswaran said he cannot accept the invitation primarily because an acceptance would "indicate that there exists a strong co-operative spirit prevailing between the Center and the Province."

He said, while people in the North are "engulfed in a climate of fear on account of the Military while the activities of the Northern Provincial Council have been stultified," accepting an invitation from the government would make him feel "guilty of facilitating tokenism".

It always is unlike selfish regionalist fanatics who don't care about their country or even their own Tamil people who are trapped in SL jails.

As a result of this invitation, SL government released dozens of fishermen who can now return happily to their families.

This is an answer to selfish tamil politicians:

Shame on Jayalalitha, Vaiko and Vijaykanth.

Tamil Nadu government should focus on developing Tamils of India rather than using cheap regionalist politics to harm India's interest as a country.

They are doing the worst disrespect to heroes like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

there's nothing from the link to support your statement - fishermen released due to invitation , on the contrary it was a court order in 13 May, before the Indian election results

A day after a Sri Lankan court ordered release of 116 fishermen from Tamil Nadu ahead of the proposed talks between the island nation and India to sort out the vexed fishermen's issue, another court in Mannar today ordered release of 24 fishermen and their five boats.
