Vietnam aims to commercialize homemade RFID applications

HO CHI MINH CITY -- Japan's Shoei Printing last week signed a contract to develop and commercialize applications of radio-frequency identification technologies based on concepts from Vietnam's Integrated Circuit Design Research and Education Center.

RFID chips, which need little power to encode and store pieces of information, are already replacing bar codes and other dated technologies.

Shoei will develop applications for two types of Vietnam-developed RFID technologies. Each uses a different radio frequency and is the result of studies conducted by the research and education center during the past four years. Chips based on HF RFID technology, which uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves, will be embedded into payment cards and access-control cards. Meanwhile, UHF RFID chips, which use ultra-high frequencies, are designed for IC tags meant to help keep track of inventories in a warehouse or packages in transit, according to the center.

"We expect to provide smartcards and operating systems in Vietnam, such as tickets for subway lines that are now under construction in Ho Chi Minh City and are expected to start rolling in the next couple of years," said Makoto Nakagawa, general manager of Shoei Printing. Nakagawa is also chief of the company's representative office in Vietnam.

The research and education center will outsource part of chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.; the chips will then be embedded in cards in Japan by Shoei. The center hopes to bring all processing stages to Vietnam by 2017, when an IC manufacturing plant in Ho Chi Minh City is to open.

According to Nakagawa, RFID-integrated products are already available in Japan and Singapore. Shoei and the Vietnamese center aim to commercialize a "brand new" and original application based on Vietnamese technology, he said.

Dao Ngoc Chien, deputy chief of the High Technology Department under Vietnam's Ministry of Science and Technology, has called the deal a breakthrough for the country's young technology industry. The project is part of a $6.6 million program to develop and make RFID chips in Vietnam.

Vietnamese companies and consumers use some 20 billion RFID chips a year. The country's RFID chip market is estimated at $45 million; indigenous vendors account for less than 5% of it.

Good, more green-high tech from JP-US r coming to VN as promises when VN agree to join TPP

. . . . . .
Low, but not dirty & polluted and can export to all TPP nations ,too :pop:

He doesn't know that Vietnam and the United States have a trade volume of nearly $45 Billion; with the balance of trade favoring Vietnam. Balance of trade between Vietnam and Japan (over $30 Billion) also favors Vietnam.

Good to see this development; hopefully we can see more Vietnamese agrarian exports to Japan as well. :)
Sure, JP-VN also have a memorandum of understanding on tech-transfer in agro-forestry and fisheries sectors:cheers:

The cooperation aims to apply advanced science and technology to planting, preservation and processing of litchi. Accordingly, in 2015, the parties will cooperate to export over 1,000 tons of litchi for Quang Ninh, Hai Duong and Bac Giang provinces to six markets, including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the US and Israel.

Under the program, Vietnamese agricultural products will be planted and processed to meet the international standard for exports. In the next step, the program aims to export from 50,000-100,000 tons of litchi each year, with the figure expected to increase in the future, leading to the establishment of a trademark for Vietnamese litchi on the international market.

Speaking at the the signing ceremony, Nguyen Duc Long, Deputy Secretary of the Quang Ninh provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, affirmed that Quang Ninh paid great attention to their agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors. Each year, it spends some VND400-500 billion on the application of science and technology products.

Mr. Nishikawa Koya, President of the Japanese Committee on Study of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Strategies, pledged to further strengthen cooperation not only in the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors but also in the building of hi-tech processing foundations as well as the cooperation in tourism./.

The bilateral trade Vietnam has with Japan and the United States exceeds $75 Billion, which is larger than the Vietnamese-Chinese trade ($60 billion).

So, clearly, Vietnam will favor Japan and United States. This will only grow with TPP being ratified. :)

As I said, CNese have 1,3 bil pple, but none of them have 10 years vision like VNese. CN after Mao's period simply is not smart enough to become VN's partner, thats why VN join TPP to contain CN :pop:

True. And I suppose one has to consider that it will take substantially more time, more capital to uplift the 1.4 billion Chinese people into developed status than say Vietnam , which has a population of about 95 million. For Vietnam to become in parity with say Taiwan, South Korea --- it will take shorter time than China. Perhaps about 2-3 decades time.

Your country is blessed, truly, to have such fertile land, and blessed with abundant fruits and vegetables !

At least through TPP, Japanese Citizens will have access to these Vietnamese agri imports and at low cost.

Right now Japanese citizens pay a fortune to have this during season.
