Japan, US agree to conclude TPP early
Japan, US agree to conclude TPP early | Bangkok Post: business

ANKARA — Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso and US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew agreed Friday the two governments should work on concluding a sweeping Pacific free trade pact at an early date, according to the governments.

Aso told reporters he discussed with Lew the need to quickly strike a deal on the US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership pact with 10 other countries when the two met on the fringes of a meeting of finance chiefs from the Group of 20 economies in Ankara.

The US Treasury Department said Lew told Aso that he is "hopeful that TPP negotiations would conclude as soon as possible."

The United States, Japan and 10 other Pacific Rim countries held ministerial talks in Hawaii in July but failed to reach a deal following the marathon negotiations on the TPP, which would cover some 40% of global output.

The 12 countries have yet to even decide when to reconvene, fueling concern that the TPP talks have been shelved at least for the time being, as US political attention shifts to the run-up to next year's presidential election.

It has been more than five and a half years since the US, Australia, Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam launched TPP negotiations in March 2010. Malaysia, Mexico, Canada and Japan joined the dialogue later.

Damn..they didn‘t even try to pretend. No specific date was given, not even a vague one..Heck they didn’t even bother bringing Australian FM on board for this agreement who is also attending G20 meeting.

But I guess "as soon as possible" is apparently good enough to keep Niceguy giggling when he wakes up every morning.

There is still be a lot of issues needed to negotiated and solved prior to a primary agreement of TPP, even within those developed nations such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. There is highly possible that US and other nations couldn't reach an agreement during Obama administration.

Considering that even WTO standard was quite tough for China, I don't think China is willing to be a member of TPP, which requirements are too high for China even now. From the economic point, TPP is not attractive to China. However, what TPP makes China worry is the political meaning of TPP

Even for Japan and US, I highly doubt that a primary agreement about TPP will be reached in the near future. Considering the tremendous domestic pressure on PM Abe from the policy to ease military restrictions, I don't think PM Abe will take another action to upset Japanese farmers

Great. So shall it be written, now LET it be DONE.

Let's see whether the TPP can be reached during Obama administration, even just between Japan and US. But I highly doubt it

Based on what I know about atmosphere of the presidential debate, including the aggressive attack on Obama administration's trade policy with Japan, Mexico and China, I can imagine that it will be harder and harder for Japan and US to reach a TPP agreement.
