Japan-U.S. exercise canceled due to U.S. fiscal standoff | GlobalPost

Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force said Tuesday that a joint exercise with the U.S. Army at a GSDF drill range in northeastern Japan has been cancelled due to the budget impasse in Washington.

The exercise was scheduled for Oct. 15 to 28 at the GSDF's Ojojihara exercise range in Miyagi Prefecture.

Around 600 GSDF and 400 U.S. Army personnel were set to take part in the joint exercise, covering infantry and antinuclear, antichemical and antibiological warfare units.

The U.S. Army told the GSDF that it was canceling the exercise, noting the U.S. fiscal standoff, GSDF officers said.

The SDF and U.S. military have staged joint exercises annually as part of efforts to strengthen their coordination.

As of Tuesday, the joint exercise scheduled at the Ojojihara range was the only one to be canceled due to the U.S. budget impasse.

Other exercises scheduled for later this month in Shiga and Kochi prefectures involving MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft will be conducted as scheduled, Japan's Defense Ministry said.

A senior Defense Ministry official said the ministry hopes more joint exercises will not be canceled.
