Japan will provide approximately US $24.5 million as a grant to Bangladesh to build a public food storage and procure equipment under a project.
The project titled "Improvement of the Capacity of Public Food Storage" was launched in a ceremony recently where Food Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque and Japanese Ambassador Shiro Sadoshima laid the foundation stone.
The project is expected to be completed by October 2014.
A Japanese Embassy press release said, the public food storage will have a capacity of approximately 25,740 mt.
By improving the capacity of Public Food Storage, it is expected to contribute to the use of arable lands; to ensure longer and safe storage averting risks; to increase efficiency of food management through reducing storage and handling losses; to use multistoried warehouses predominantly for storing national buffer stock by taking food security into account; to maintain high unloading and dispatching capacity in case of emergency; to maintain high quality of grain and cost effectiveness in maintenance and operation.
The Embassy said the preparatory work of the project began in October and Shimizu Corporation of Japan will do the construction work while Japanese consultation company, Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd. will manage the schedule and monitor the construction work.
Shimizu Corporation, founded in 1804, has provided architectural, engineering, construction, and development services for commercial, industrial, infrastructure, and residential projects in more than 40 countries. Shimizu has undertaken various projects in Bangladesh, including Chittagong Airport and Rupsa Bridge.
Dr Takao Toda, Chief Representative of JICA, Ms Mushfeka Ikfat, Secretary in Charge, Ministry of Food, members of parliament Abdul Momen Talukder, Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury, Mohammad Abdul Jalil, Emajuddin Pramanik, also attended the ceremony.
