Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Friday he wants Japan and Vietnam to deepen their already good relations and cooperate to promote regional peace and prosperity.

"A key to the partnership ties between our two countries is contributing to the region's peace and prosperity," Abe told Vietnam News Agency General Director Nguyen Duc Loi in an exclusive interview in Tokyo, where he is on a working visit.

Since 2014, Japan and Vietnam have been pursuing an "Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia," under which they have been cooperating on economic, political and security issues, as well as in regional and international fora, while also promoting cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

"I really want to further deepen the relationship between our two countries," Abe said, according to a transcript. "I want our two countries to work together to solve regional and global issues."

With that in mind, Abe noted that he has invited Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to attend the Group of 20 summit to be held in Osaka in late June as a guest.

Abe said a stable and peaceful Indo-Pacific region is the foundation for ensuring peace and prosperity.

Japan and Vietnam should thus join hands to create a "free and open" Indo-Pacific region, he said, while also mentioning the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight -- an apparent allusion to China's vast territorial claims in the South China Sea that are disputed by Vietnam and other countries.

Abe hailed the success of Vietnam's "doi moi" reform policy over the last three decades, crediting it for the country's impressive economic development.

In the eyes of the Japanese people, Abe said, Vietnam is an industrious, smart and patient nation with warm-hearted people, many of whom have become increasingly familiar with Japanese language and culture.

Noting there are now some 300,000 Vietnamese residing in Japan, the prime minister expressed hope that more skilled workers will come to work in his country after its new policy to receive foreign workers takes effect from April 1.

Interesting stat: the number of Vietnamese people migrating to Japan has gone from zero to 300,000 within few years. In contrast, Vietnamese migration to China over the course of 500 years is multiple times lower, in total about 40,000.

That's surprising considering China is just next door. But then again Japan is wealthier and has higher quality of life than China, so naturally Japan is more attractive.

How do they get on in Japan? The Japanese love tourists and visitors but are not fond of settlers.

Well the "interesting stat" about China is just a lie and the opposite of "is multiple times lower" is the case. Also the Japanse number is very generously rounded up. But they might be really teaching this revisionist nonsense in Vietnamese schools because they are still bitter about getting beaten up in the past. Would not be surprised.

How do they get on in Japan?
The vast majority of Vietnamese where taken in as refugees from the U.S. Vietnam war exodus or are their descendants. Accepting waves of Vietnamese refugees was simply pushed on the not long ago "defeated nationalist Japan" by the West.

It isn't "surprising"; as @Globenim mentioned, he's full of sh*t. Here are his countrymen running to get into China:

. .
That doesn't show any contradiction in his number?

40K in China and 300K in Japan.
Take a look at that video again. Does that look like a people so disinterested in China that there's only 40,000 of them after after 500 years? o_O
There's probably 40,000 illegal Vietnamese immigrants that snuck into China just last year alone.

The traders return home when markets close. They „run“ to China because verhicles are not allowed. It’s more or less the same situation between two primitive countries in Africa: Congo and Angola. The few Vietnamese in China are recognized as ethnicity., you call them the Jing people.

That’s not the reason. Japan had been poorer than China for most of history. Lots of Vietnamese migrated to Cambodia. A very poor country.

Japan just adopts a new open door policy recently. Migrants need to be proficient in the language, skillfull, young and educated.Vietnam is relatively poor but has lots of people. So going to Japan is a good option.
I believe Japan is open to all migrants of all nationalities. Pakistani are welcome. Japan wants more people.

Germany is another example. Some 170,000 Vietnamese live here.

300,000 residing in Japan, not immigrants, you maybe have more than that number of Vietnamese coming to China every single day.

Guangxi province alone has over 100,000 Vietnamese working there.

JP is dying due to old age, so they need more ppl wt same culture and skin.

And poor Vneee fit wt it.So, once day, JP will become VN's province .

A simple video did not illustrate anything. You need the numbers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Vietnamese
You also need some literacy and reading comprehension to understand the numbers you are talking about.

He said "migration to China over the course of 500 years". You posted numbers of foreign residents at a specific point in time somewhere in the past decade.

You do understand the difference? The utterly false chronological aspect aside you can't conflate "migrants" with "foreign residents". These groups may fully overlap or not at all. It depends entirely on the definition of the particular source used, the particular countries laws and the particular countries historic background.

Your number for China doesn't cover even a fraction of the million of indigenized ethnic Vietnamese with Chinese citizenship that have migrated to China in the past half millenia and he was obviously talking about this type of migration. In reverse Japan doesn't have such a historic background and the majority of its unwelcomed Vietnamese migrants are technical "refugees" with permanent residency permits which fall under the definition of "foreign residents" of the document cited in the case of Japan.

You're the one lacking comprehension. Did I agree with him on the statement 'over the course of 500 years' in the first place?

Yes, by conflating the same two things he did, explicitely repeating the same conflated numbers he did and throwing a link with the same unrelated conflated numbers right after you denied anything you replied to would contradict his simply false "interesting facts".

Lets not get silly and pretend you didn't, just because you didn't say "I fully agree with him and everything he said is correct" verbatim. That barely comprehensible Viet troll could get away with that excuse. Your English is not that horrible.
