Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin confirmed that a defense wishlist is already in the hands of Japanese defense officials. The list consists military equipment that the Philippines plans to acquire from Japan.

Gazmin confirmed this to state news agency. He said all equipment in the list are to address maritime security.

Philippines and Japan have come up to a strengthened bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges based on Strategic Partnership in the recently concluded Japan-Philippines Defense Ministerial meeting held last January 29, 2015 in Tokyo, Japan.

Regular high level defense and military meetings have also been scheduled. Philippine Navy and Air Force will also conduct training and capability building together with their Japanese counterparts. Both countries also agreed to explore possibility of cooperation in the area of defense equipment and technology.

I don't know much about the specs so if you can help it would be appreciated. :p:

Japan is a very underrated military power. They have the best navy in Asia second only to US Navy fleet. Their surface combat vessel of destroyers are said to be among the finest. The Japanese SSKs are also quite modern and effective. I once read that Japanese submarines a re replaced every 15 years and hence every vessel is new. Is that true?

I would not say we have the 'best' in Asia, but we have a navy that can annihilate any naval threat in Northeast Asian region. Should any agitators do anything...unfortunate.

Unlike some other powers in our region, we prefer not to boast too much. Better to remain silent, and crush the enemy through their height of arrogance.

You know what i mean, my friend?

I know what you mean my friend. But must say people who underestimate modern day Japanese military know very little.

These would prove effective for the Philippine Army. Exceptionally indispensable for island defense, and destroying enemy stronghold in mountainous regions.

The Chu-SAM is a surface to air missile system of Japanese origin. It was developed in the 1990’s to replace the aging Hawk system in Japanese service. It is an advanced medium range system which fills the gap between the indigenous Tan-SAM and US Patriot in Japanese service. The Chu-SAM, which stands for medium SAM, is also known as the Type 03 and SAM-4.

The Chu-SAM missile is a single stage solid propellant missile that is hot launched from its vertical launch container. It has clipped cruciform control surfaces at the front and rear and also employs a thrust vectoring nozzle. The system as a whole is based on 8x8 cross country trucks, including command center, radar unit, launcher and transloader. The trucks are not armored and the system is not protected in any way.

The system employs an active phased array antenna and tracks up to 100 targets while being able to target 12 of them at the same time. A data link guides the missile towards a predicted area of intercept where the missile’s own seeker takes over. The active radar homing seeker on the missile is derived from the Type 99 air to air missile.

The Chu-SAM is capable of engaging modern aircraft, helicopters and cruise missiles. The maximum range is 50 km while the maximum altitude is 10 km. The speed is about Mach 2.5. Each launch vehicle carries six missiles and up to 12 targets may be engaged at a time.

The 8x8 cross country trucks provide the Chu-SAM with a good level of mobility, especially when compared to the Hawk system it is replacing. Although highly mobile the Chu-SAM is not considered a self-propelled SAM system as it requires preparation time into and out of action.

The Chu-SAM is in service with Japan and is slowly replacing the Hawk system. It is operational since 2005 and production continuous at a low pace. As with all Japanese military systems it is not sold on the international market and it has not been exported.

The Chu-SAM radar vehicle is based on a Japanese 8x8 truck. In the firing position four jacks are lowered and the active phased array radar is elevated.

The Chu-SAM command centers are based on two 4x4 Toyota Mega Cruiser vehicles. Both have a cabin in which radar data is analyzed and missile launch is controlled.

The Chu-SAM transloader vehicle is based on a Japanese 8x8 truck and carries four missiles and a crane. The missiles cannot be launched from this vehicles. When the crane is operated four outriggers are used.

The Chu-SAM generator vehicle is based on a Japanese 8x8 truck and has four reels with power lines at the rear. The generator provides power for prolonged continuous operation.

I prefer that the Chinese claim the rank of 'best navy' in Asia. Afterall, in fact, i would even say Japanese Military , especially the Japanese MSDF is probably the weakest force in Asia. Even Cambodian Navy's river boats are considered stronger. :)

C'mon don't be like that man. I think Japan's navy is very modern and definitely one of the best. But let's face it... not against China's PLAN in these days. Still, I do not underestimate Japanese military. In fact, I think calling Japanese military 'Japanese Self-Defense Force' is highly misleading and inaccurate. Japan has one of the highest military budgets in the world and also is one of the most modern. Actually, the JDSF has got more firepower and offensive capabilities than most "normal" country's military in the world.

Since , estimate that is, a battery is equivalent to about 16 or so launchers, the Type 3 Chu SAM is perfect for the Philippines. I believe that 3 batteries (1 in Luzon, 1 in Visayas, and 1 in Mindanao) would be perfect for the Philippines. At I believe that the Philippines can purchase this through soft loans, which Japan is now allowing through defense-related agreements.

Thanks for your appraisal, @21stCentury . Tho I prefer that we never allow our heads get the best of us. Better to think one is 'low' and aim for continued perfection, than think one is 'the best' and become lapsed. You understand?

This is perfect for countries like the Philippines who have a vast coast line, and are insular in nature. These can have multidimensional uses, especially in the role of mobile coastal batteries --- that can easily and accurately target enemy landing craft, even transport ships. :)

This is why an Air Defense System is now important for the Philippines. :)

Definitely, as a matter of fact, that very characteristic was part of China's official policy during Deng Xiaopeng's time.

"Keep a cool head and maintain a low profile. Never take the lead - but aim to do something big."

@Nihonjin1051 - Isn't JMSDF also employing the standard missile for air defence and ballistic missile defence?

Yes, Japan uses the SM-2 and SM-6 for all aspect air defense, and the SM-3 for ballistic missile defense, as noted here:

Japanese-Aegis-destroyer-firing-SM-3-missile-JMSDF.jpg

Japan and the US are currently co-developing the long-range SM-3 IIA:

SM-3 Block IIA

The new SM-3 Block IIA is being developed in cooperation with Japan and will be deployable on land as well as at sea. It has two distinct new features: larger rocket motors that will allow it to defend broader areas from ballistic missile threats and a larger kinetic warhead.

Raytheon: Standard Missile-3 (SM-3)

Operational range - Block IIA ~2500 km (1350 nautical miles)
Flight ceiling - Block IIA ~1500 km (933 miles)
Speed - Block IIA ~4.5 km/s

Range and ceiling figures based on absolute capability shown for Block IIA missile. Intercept capability against an SS-19 Stiletto launched from Kaliningrad against New York is shown as approximately 1200 km range and 900 km ceiling for a North Sea intercept.
