Japan is about to pass a bill that would allow its military to fight abroad for the first time since World War II - Business Insider

  • May 14, 2015, 3:16 AM

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's cabinet was set to approve on Thursday bills to implement a drastic shift in security policy allowing the military to fight abroad for the first time since World War Two, although the public is divided and wary of the change.

The planned changes, reflected in new U.S.-Japan defense guidelines unveiled last month, set the stage for Japan to play a bigger role in the bilateral alliance as Tokyo and Washington face challenges such as China's growing military assertiveness.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s cabinet adopted a resolution last July reinterpreting the pacifist constitution to drop a self-imposed ban on exercising the right of collective self-defence, or militarily aiding a friendly country under attack.

Abe is expected to hold a news conference after his cabinet approves the bills following the formal sign-off by his Liberal Democratic Party and its more dovish partner, the Komeito party.

Abe's promise in a speech to the U.S. Congress on April 29 that the legislation would be enacted this summer angered opposition parties, but the bills are likely to pass in coming months given the ruling bloc's majority in parliament.

Opinion polls show that Japanese voters are both confused by and divided over the changes, which even supporters say have stretched the post-war constitution's pacifist Article 9 to the limit. Abe has made clear he wants to formally revise Article 9, a more politically difficult goal to achieve.

A survey by public broadcaster NHK aired this week showed that 49 percent didn't understand the proposed changes very well or at all. Fifty percent did not approve of Japan's expanded military role in the new U.S.-Japan defense guidelines.

"The problem is that even looking at the legislation, one cannot envision when, and how far, the Self-Defense Forces (military) will be deployed," said an editorial in the Nikkei business daily.

The new legislation would allow Japan to exercise the minimum force necessary if a country with close ties to Tokyo is attacked. It would also allow Japan's military to provide logistics support to foreign forces operating in line with the U.N. charter, without a special law for each mission.

Another change would drop geographical limits on Japanese defense support for the U.S. military and other foreign armed forces, which had previously been envisioned as restricted to situations involving contingencies on the Korean peninsula.

@Genesis @cnleio @Pangu @Shotgunner51 ----- you guys ever heard of the Imperial Guards?

.
lol. Japan was no Imperial, China was Imperial.

Japan's called Kingdom Guards.

I'd expect Nohonjin 1051 joining the canon folders fighting Taliban and ISIS in Iraq & Syria very soon?

. .
The Same Imperial Guards that defeated the British Malay Command, as well as formed as the shock troops , carrying the Emperor's Own Banner when we launched the Campaign to take Dutch East Indies. Your very own countrymen buckled to the Imperial Guards' relentless attacks, leading the 25th Area Imperial Army.

At the same time, concurrently the Imperial Navy gutted the Dutch Fleet. hehe.

Do you still think you have what it takes to beat me in a fair and square fight ? :azn:

. . . . .
Can you please tell the reactions of ordinary Japanese citizens towards these developments?

The leftists , of course, are against. But they have so little influence in the Parliament (in both upper house and lower house) that their opposition is of little to no consequence. Majority of the Japanese Parliament is in support of re-militarization and , the plan is by 2017, Japan will write a totally NEW Constitution, effectively completely ammending Article 9, and stripping the clause that prevents Japan to make war, as well as striking the clause that Japan is to be a pacifist state for all eternity. LOL.

Can you imagine? The Americans actually tried to impose upon Japan a constitution that would prevent Japan from making war for "all time" ? LOL!

We are seeing the rise of Japan, as we speak. So much developments happening so fast.

Re-emergence of Japanese Army will go a long way in balancing the Asian power equation.Best of luck to your people and hope that our armies would cooperate in future engagements.

Japan's army only defeated Qing dynasty's army and KMT's army in the recent time in history when China was at it weakest as an agriculture dynasty taking its last dying breath in its ill bed busy with internal civil wars and numerious Western military incusions..,

History tells that only under such a scenario, Japan's army had a chance.

Other than that for the rest of the last 5, 000 years, Japan's army didn't stand a chance against Imperial China's army.

Abe's new laws will potentially take Japanese race to the brink of extinction for teh first time in history, because

1. it took out the peaceful constitution that Japan has known for post WW2. The swort has 2 edges where Japan can legitly send army to foreign soils for the 1st time post WW2, it also means that foreign troops can legitly send their armies to Japan as well.

2. It is the nuclear age now with not only n-bomb but advanced once-for-all hydrogen bombs too. With the tiny geographic size that Japan (let alone the Tsumani and earthquake-prone zone that Japnese islands sit on) , even Japan could churn out 1000s of nukes overnight( it would become worse for Japan should that happen) , Japanese island chain would become the legit first target of any nuclear power and could be sunk into the Pacific in the first minutes of nuclear exchange should such a war occur, god forbidden. On the other hand, only 3 countries in the world could survive such a war: China, US and Russia, hence Chinese, Yanks and Ruskies could save their races, simplely because their geo size are just too darn large that no nukes could completely wipe them out, unlike Japan/Japanese

3. Today won't be eternal and history moves on: USA's military hegemony will not last long, in fact it has long passed its peak and on its way down very quickly. Japan Abe therefore has chosen a wrong bet against history, with "stakes" ( the entire Japanese island and Japanese race) way too high for him to afford. History will teach Japan another dire lesson if most Japanese fail to see this way. Just wait and see.

Oh, anther thing:

people all make errors and mistakes. When you invaded another land, murdered their armless civilians in masses, it's not so-called "honour", what's honour of killing millions of defenceless civilians? it's called dishonour and shame! What you do then? You apologise sincerely and try to make up for it, oke?

This is called how to become a decent human being, let alone becoming a decent student of Confucius. Without sincere apology, no amount of fake politeness , or bowings , on surface could cover the sins.

Be a decent man before you talk about wars. ( not neccesarily target at Ninhonjin 1051, but definitely towards the Abe regime and its doemstic supporters)

Should such a war happen, god forbid, either nuclear or hydrogen, or man-to-man with cold weapons, I trust the Chinese will settle the score once and for all.
