SENDAI – Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Indonesian Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla agreed Saturday to work together in fighting Islamic extremism, Japanese officials said.

Their agreement comes at a time when a spate of attacks by Islamic extremists, including the recent killing of two Japanese hostages by the Islamic State militant group, has fueled global concerns over the growing threat of terrorism.

The role of Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, is deemed important in efforts to combat Muslim extremists. Japan, for its part, has been taking steps to help reduce poverty in Southeast Asian countries as poverty is widely seen as a major factor in feeding terrorism, political analysts said.

Kishida and Kalla, who met on the sidelines of the U.N. World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, underscored the need to deal with extremist groups and the importance of being “moderate,” the officials said.

In an interview with Kyodo News, Kalla, referring to Indonesia as a “moderate” Muslim country, said he sees cooperation between his country and Japan as vital to ensure security in Asia and to “reduce the impact of South China Sea” disputes.

Parts of Southeast Asia are known for the active operations of militant groups. The South China Sea has also been a source of tensions between several Southeast Asian nations — notably Vietnam and the Philippines — and China due to overlapping territorial claims in the sea.

Kalla said he and Kishida agreed to strengthen their “strategic relationship” and boost bilateral trade, given that Indonesia and Japan are both maritime nations, the officials said.

Kalla was quoted by the officials as saying he understands that Japanese companies’ interest in investing in Indonesia is high.

Touching on other areas of cooperation, Indonesia’s vice president expressed his readiness to offer his country’s help in mediating between North Korea and other countries including Japan.

With Indonesia having “good relations” with both North Korea and South Korea, Kalla said his country has invited the North to attend the Asia-Africa Conference it will host next month as part of efforts to bring together the North and other countries.

Asked if North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would come to the conference, Kalla said Indonesia has “not yet confirmed” but that the North Korean side is “eager to come.”

It is unknown whether Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will attend the 60th commemoration of the conference in Bandung in West Java Province.

@madokafc , @Indos , @pr1v4t33r , @Jakartans@PkDef , @Brainsucker and all my Indonesian brothers and sisters,

With much pride and honor, I hope to see further cooperation between the Japan Ground Self Defense Force and Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Darat. Second, I hope to see greater training between the Tokushu Sakusen Gun (Japan Special Forces Group) and the Komando Pasukan Khusus. :)

Jakarta (ANTARA News)- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed his hope for more concrete bilateral cooperation established between Indonesia and Japan as well as Indonesia and China.

"The state visits are to follow up talks held in November last year with Chinese President Xi Jin Ping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe," Jokowi said here on Sunday prior to his departure to Tokyo.

The Indonesian head of state left Jakarta for Tokyo on Sunday for an overseas trip that will take him to Japan, China and Malaysia, until March 28, 2015.

The head of state is scheduled to make state visits to Japan and China, from March 22 to 28, 2015, to intensify economic cooperation.

He will be in Tokyo on March 22-25, and proceed to Beijing for a two-day state visit until March 27.

Jokowi said the state visits are related to Indonesias development agenda to accelerate the constructions of infrastructure, and intensify manufactures and investment.

The weakening of rupiah against the US dollar is a sign for the improvement of Indonesias economy, he noted.

"The rupiah depreciation lately has made investment in Indonesia very attractive and competitive as a production base," President Jokowi remarked.

Japan has become the second largest investor in Indonesia, while China has a huge potential to invest in Indonesia.

Jokowi said many Japanese manufacturing industries are operating in Indonesia, and hopefully the number will increase in the future.

"We appreciate not only for the capital that they brought here, but also the technology, system and networking that they own and could be applied in Indonesia," the president said.

The presidential entourage in the overseas trip comprises, among others, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi, State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, the defense minister and Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto.

Also Trade Minister Rahmat Goberl, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sofyan Djalil, Chief of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Moeldoko, and Chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Franky Sibarani.

The unit is Police Special Detachment 88/Detasemen Khusus 88, they main mission is to dismantle any terrorism attempt. They're infamous for "no witnesses" in any operation, sudden strike, and that what makes them fearsome.

it just the implementation is going slowly and so many sector left untouched for years

But lately the cooperation in defense sector is going smoothly and we had doing Joint Exercises since 2012, and Indonesia has expressing our interest toward Brahmos and Indian made AEW.
