A Japanese submarine joined a military exercise in the contested area of the South China Sea, in a move that could infuriate Beijing, which claims most of the disputed waters.

Japan’s participation is the latest challenge to China’s military build-up in Asia’s most strategic waterway.

In a rare announcement on Monday, the Japanese defence ministry confirmed the submarine Kuroshio, as well as the helicopter carrier Kaga and two other destroyers, the Inazuma and Suzutsuki, took part in an anti-submarine warfare exercise in the South China Sea on Thursday.

This was the first time Japan’s maritime self-defence force has confirmed a military drill by a Japanese submarine in the waters.

Kuroshio, which left Japan on August 26, visited Cam Ranh in central Vietnam on Monday afternoon in the first port call by a Japanese submarine to a strategically important military base in Vietnam, the most provocative claimant against China’s military build-up in the South China Sea.

Japan’s defence ministry did not give much detail of where exactly the exercise was held, but Japan’s Asahi newspaper cited sources as saying the Kuroshio joined the other three Japanese warships just southwest of the Beijing-controlled Scarborough Shoal, a territory also claimed by the Philippines.

Seems Japan is gradually asserting a stronger military position in the west Pacific/East China Sea region that it vacated after the end of WWll. Japanese public opinion itself is against any escalation of tension by its military. It is because of not only the wartime military of Japan made the population of eastern and northern Asia suffer from its highhanded wartime activities, it also caused the Japanese population to suffer from poverty, hunger, disease, and malnutrition.

So, the Japanese military and the politicians are treading very cautiously not to alarm its own population as well as the population of the neighboring countries. I think Japan will partially fill in the vacuum due to the almost non-interference by the somewhat weakened US military presence in the west Pacific. The US has been pressing Japan to do so for many years.

Japan is still reluctant because the politicians of the ruling party are not sure if the people will accept such a new role. China will certainly dislike the new move and will try to torpedo it with diplomacy and by supplying project money.

. .
However, it has no effect. Chinese warships and planes still sail freely in the Japanese territory middle.

How does a military exercise constitute a challenge ?
Because SC sea belongs to China. A Ming eunuch discovered the sea 500 years ago as the very first person on earth.Hey... other people as the Viet, the Indo, the Malay living since thousands of years don’t count.

That is the reason why you should never invite Chinese to your house. They will claim your garden your toilet as China ancient territory.

For what you say to be true would then have to mean that Japan has no interests in the South China Sea. It would have to mean that Japan has no interest in ensuring safe and guaranteed free passage of trade and oil to reach Japan. It would also have to mean that Japan has no interest in the security interests of the other countries in the South China Sea such as Vietnam and the Philippines. If those countries had to face China in diplomacy or military action alone vs China, they could not win, which the result would mean greater influence of China in those countries and greater control on the South China Sea. And not only does that threaten goods and oil that go to Japan, it also changes the strategic situation for Japan by granting PLAN nuclear ICBM missiles more water to hide safely, thus raising the nuclear credibility of China. Such strategic increase of China would naturally be used as leverage against Japan. Japan was a pacified country but is no fool and the leaders are not going to entrust Japan's security to a country ruled by a single political party that forbids elections, censors the internet, and so on. So your simpleton statement is incorrect. The US would not be needed to cause Japan to act in the South China Sea, which goes in mutual beneficial interest to other ASEAN countries.

The purpose of the voyages of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force into the South China Sea is not as a means to respond to Chinese aircraft and ships maneuvering in the the East China Sea and through the Miyako strait. What Japan has done instead in response to those is deploy anti-ship and anti-air missiles along the southern islands, beef up the Japanese Coast Guard, double the number of F-15Js deployed at Naha airport from 20 to 40 aircraft, and created the "Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade" which could be called "Japanese Marines".

Japan should respect the will of japanese people who want friendship with china and kick USA marines out but puppet govt not doing it

Japanese of course want friendship and healthy economic relations with China. But not at the expense of security interest related to the South China Sea, Taiwan, and the Senkaku islands. It is on China to curtail expansionists agenda regarding those three items for the sake of reducing military tension.

Ah, it's not important. We need to sail freely anywhere in the world.

You describe a a great many, But, Japan can not make its own choice. For example, peaceful methods, Rather than military competition. This is only a hypothesis, BUT, The US will not allow JP to make assumptions.

.
They simply can't choose what they want to do~~~

This statement you said is a rather strange statement since it is Japan and not China that has elections, free internet, no book seller kidnappings, no dissidents being thrown into jail, etc. That should be a strong indication that Japan is acting on self derived intention. CCP propaganda will naturally speak otherwise as a desperate attempt to smear.

Well if you say so in bold font, it must be true, nevermind the absence of supporting points and what not :-)

Japanese p0rn helps lots of people with that, no need for feeling tough and macho with an expansionists agenda. Too bad that in addition to elections, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, but also p0rn is censored in China. Whenever you watch it, remember that you go against CCP party rules.
