Japan is to provide military and security aid to neighbouring states worth USD500 million in the three years to 2019, it was announced on 17 August. The funding, which will be offered to countries in the South China Sea including the Philippines and Vietnam, is aimed at boosting maritime security.

The announcement, made by Japanese foreign minister Taro Kono during a joint press conference held at the US State Department with Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera and their counterparts in the United States, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defence Secretary James Mattis, followed a meeting in which the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to their strategic alliance.
