AMRITSAR: British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday termed as "shameful" the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of innocent Indians by British troops.

"This was a deeply shameful act in British history. One that Winston Churchill rightly described at that time as monstrous. We must never forget what happened here and we must ensure that the UK stands up for the right of peaceful protests," Cameron wrote in the visitors' book of the memorial.

However, Cameron, who is the first British prime minister to visit the Jallianwala Bagh, did not offer any apology for the massacre.

The British prime minister earlier paid homage at the Jallianwala Bagh memorial, the site of the massacre of hundreds of men, women and children by British troops April 13, 1919.

Queen Elizabeth too had visited the Jallianwala Bagh memorial in October 1997 and paid homage to those killed in the massacre of unarmed Indians by British forces led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer.

soo chuhe kaakei beeli haaj ko chaali.......................

Politicians come and politicians go. Their queen can apologize to the Irish where the incidents were more recent in history. But to the Indians, their PM gives a left handed apology and we beam with pride. And about that fat toad Churchill. The most anti-Indian racist to have walked the planet. Who famously called us a beastly land of a beastly faith.

Seems like Cameron is still hopeful that the Indian Govt will reconsider the 10bn $ fighter deal it signed with France and give the contract to eurofighter..... hence all these fake tears and gimmicks to woo the Indian Govt and its people.....

Why are we looking for an apology ?

How will it help ? Have we post independence not carried out similar activities ?

The then Lt Governor of Punjab was put to death by Saheed Udham Singh.

We must respect the dead but care for the living & think of those who shall follow.

Dude just stop buttering...You are not going to get MMRCA deal....

I for one see it as a positive development. No doubt this apology has been made because of UK government's financial interest. That in turn has been made possible by the growth of Indian economy.

Jallianwala Bagh massacre is a tragedy not just for Amritsar, but whole of Punjab, and whole of then British India. This is a bit of shared history and I welcome the fact that strength of Indian economy has made the British government bow its head and acknowledged a monstrous injustice having been done by it.

For those who downplay this act are not recognizing the symbolism. It is worth something.

I guess cameroon get heart attack when we sign the deal with France..
