Italy accused of paying off Taliban

It was the costliest battle for the French military in a quarter of a century. Ten soldiers were killed in August 2008 when a foot patrol walked into a Taliban ambush in the Sarobi area of Afghanistan, an area they believed quiet.

It had been up until then, because the Italians, who had previously policed the zone before handing over to the French the month before, had been paying bribes to local Taliban commanders.

That is what media reports today are claiming, and as military experts have commented, while paying bribes may be a legitimate means of peacekeeping, not telling your allies you are doing it is pure folly.

The report adds that the US found out that the Italian Secret Service was paying bribes in Herat province further to the west through intercepted radio communications. The ambassador in Rome made a diplomatic protest in June 2008, just weeks before the attack. Subsequently, payments in the Sarobi area were also discovered.

Since the day Italian base was attacked a month or so back by Taliban and as a result the US led forces killed over 100 Civilians sparking an outrage among Afghans, the US is shifting blame on Italy.

But it is also reported that NATO, US forces pay bribes to Taliban for not attacking for sometime

LOL... now the time had to come when NATO had to bribe its enemy to stay quiet. Its actually quiet funny that Italians kept controlling the area that way. As USA is on the verge of defeat, I am sure USA must be looking for similar commanders desperately. For that, Italian soldiers could be of great help!

Can u tell me where i said US forces paying taliban ? if i said so its not first time they have done that.

Dont cry as ur NATO forces in Afghanistan who payed taliban not kill them. Its French who have reported that and some one leaked out this info to newspaper thats why BBC asked afghan about that. I know its hard to belive but thats trouth.

Its not at all unrealistic that some of the commanders may be bought off with dope to keep things quiet and happy. Infact US probably would have bought off the whole Taliban if it was possible to do so. Anyways, I am afraid some of that funding might be making its way to Pak Taliban. We need to raise this issue with the Americans. They need to be more discreet in offering these bribes, like putting in extra conditions of the money not being used for militancy purposes or something like that.
