Istanbul has topped the “Top 25 Destinations" list on TripAdvisor, the world's biggest travel website.

Rome, London, Beijing, Prague, Marrakech, and Paris followed Istanbul on the list, which is based on user comments and ratings.

The list ranks New York 12th, Barcelona 15th, Dubai 17th, Sydney 21st and San Francisco 24th.

Updated for a sixth time this year, it takes into account travel opinions published within the space of a year on touristic places, hotels, and restaurants.

Istanbul was 12th on the TripAdvisor's list in 2013

It's sad that i have been throughout the world but not Turkey. Turkey is my next stop. Guaranteed, have some boring Turkish food, visit that big *** Mosque in downtown Istanbul. See the rotating dancers ( whatever they are, sufi type dancers) and drink yucky Turkish coffee :fie:

God damn I'ma visit soon.

Constantinople,where?o_O
I only see Istanbul for allmost 600 years now.

The city was originally called Constantinople. And was founded by Caesar Constantinus the Great, the Roman Emperor who legalized the Christian religion and made it the state religion of the Roman Empire.

The city, Constantinople, has a significant meaning for the West as well as for the great Ottoman Empire, which conquered it.

Three Empires controlled that city.

1. Imperium Romanum
2. Imperium Byzantium
3. Imperium Ottomanum

Constantinople or Istanbul is, literally, where the West meets East. Historically and Culturally, it is the common bond between the West and the Near East.

Istanbul is a nice place but n1? I didn't go most of the cities in top 10 but I guess I underestimate Istanbul if it won n1 place again.

There are the straits, the mosques, churches and synagogues, few museums and istaklal street which looks just like an average European street. Maybe they got impressed because they didn't expect it.

The restaurants at istiklal street were horrible. One of the worst culinary experiences. Quality / price wise horrible. Even restaurants in kayseri were better.

Other than istiklal street and those few touristic places I summed above there is nothing notable. A lot of parts of Istanbul are very underdeveloped, if you go behind taksim square (when you come from istiklal street) it looks like Palestine. I lived there for six months because prices are cheap and clubs are close. Night life is also nothing special. Way bellow European standards in terms of quality of the clubs.

I'm still glad Istanbul won tough. It is good for Istanbul economy. Maybe they can take those old appartments down and make city plan which the city totally lacks at the moment. Also if earthquake happens, tengri forbids, I'm afraid we will have casualties in the tens of thousands.

I'm planning to visit Turkey this summer with a group of friends. In fact i'm planning to tour Greece, Turkey and also Cyprus. Some key spots in Turkey I'll be definitely stopping by include:

1. Constantinople / Istanbul
2. Ankara
3. Cappadocia Region
4. Antioch

I'll be posting pictures...!

I haven't been to this place; and I'm sure its gorgeous as nobody has ever really had complaints about the city. But I really doubt that it's number 1.

Good picks but Ankara is not touristic place, it is brick city with only buildings. If you go you should visit ataturks rest place and Anatolian civilization's museum. The other placed you picked is a must see. One place I recommend is Ephesus/efes.

I didnt ask for a history lesson,i know the history.
The city was originally called New Rome but the Romans called it Constantinople in his honor.
So we should call it New Rome?

I visited Ephesus (The Virgin Mary's house is located a few miles away from ephesus), I visited Konya, Cappadocia, Istanbul, Bursa. In cappadocia the landscape is amazing. You are allowed to go into the old houses freely, there is also an underground city that goes very deep into the earth.

These are the places I visited last summer. I wish I had seen more stuff. (this for example Caravanserais, Kervansarays, Cappadocia, Turkey)
