Isro scientists hope for a better future with Modi - The Times of India
MUMBAI: Narendra Modi as India's PM will command Isro to higher orbits as he has always been a strong supporter of the country's space programme, according to scientists and engineers of the Indian space agency.
On Tuesday it was announced that Modi will also be in charge of the departments of space and atomic energy.
Under his command, the scientists expect that some key projects like the human space flight programme, India's second mission to Mars with a lander and rover, and other deep space missions will get the `go' from the Modi cabinet.
In the near future a high level Isro team will make a presentation to the PM regarding some of the future programmes and ``India's space vision.''
They remembered that when Vajpayee became PM in March 1998 two key scientific projects were approved. They were Pokhran-2, the successful underground nuclear tests and India's first mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-1.
Speaking to Toi on condition of anonymity, a top Isro official recalled that Modi as CM of Gujarat frequently interacted with the space community, showed interest in their work and made it a point to use space technology in the day-to-day administration of the Gujarat government.
He said that there could not be better proof of Modi's enthusiasm for the space programme than his unscheduled visit to the Ahmedabad-based Space Application Centre a few hours after the successful launch of Chandrayaan-1, on October 22,2008, and personally congratulated the scientists.
Modi told the scientists that he wanted to witness the launch of Chandrayaan-1 at Sriharikota, but was unable to do so. He said that the Gujarat cabinet set aside briefly its regular agenda, prepared a congratulatory message which Modi personally delivered to the scientists at the Space Application Centre. The centre had contributed two payloads to the lunar mission.
He told the scientists that the remote sensing technology developed at the Space Application Centre had benefitted several people across the country.
