Israeli Defense Minister Compares Syria to Smashed Egg Turned Into Omelet

Syria is doomed as a unified state and cannot be put together again, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon claimed at a press conference with US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter in Tel Aviv.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In the past four and a half years, Syria has been embroiled in a civil war that has cost up to 300,000 lives. Israel opposes the Syrian government of President Bashir al-Assad because of its close ties to Iran and to the Iranian backed Shi’a Hezbollah, or Party of God, in southern Lebanon.

“We believe that Syria is like an egg which has become [an] omelet,” Ya’alon told the press conference on Monday, according to a transcript from the US Department of Defense. “There is no way to make egg from an omelet.”

Ya’alon noted that, “We don't see any chance for unification [of] Syria as a solid unified state as it was in the past, in the coming future.”

He added that Syria was already splintered into several quasi-independent elements.
“As we can see now, we have already… enclaves,” Ya’alon said. “Syrian Kurdistan in the north [while] the Druze are concentrating in certain area in the south. And we have many Sunni elements like [Islamic State] in the east.”

In eastern Syria, the Jabhat al-Nusra and former Free Syrian Army militias were “operating now together as a coalition,” he added.

Carter was visiting Israel the same day that the United Nations Security Council approved the nuclear agreement the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany reached with Iran last week.

The Israeli government strongly opposed the agreement.
