Israel intercepts suspected weapons ship -military
JERUSALEM, March 15 (Reuters) - Israeli naval commandos on Tuesday boarded a German-owned merchant ship in the Mediterranean carrying weapons for Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, the military said.
A military spokeswoman said Israeli forces did not encounter resistance when they intercepted the "Victoria" some 200 miles from Israel. The vessel was being taken to a port in Israel.
Israel maintains a land and naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave controlled by Hamas Islamists opposed to peace with the Jewish state.
The ship, registered in Liberia, is owned by a German company, the military said, and had been bound for Alexandria, Egypt.
In a statement, the military said "the various weaponry on the vessel was intended for the use of terror organisations operating in the Gaza Strip". The statement stressed that Turkey was not involved in the shipment.
Last May, Israel sparked an international outcry when naval commandos seized a Turkish ship that was part of a flotilla trying to break the Gaza blockade.
The soldiers encountered violent resistance from pro-Palestinian activists on board the cruise vessel Mavi Marmara and killed nine people, in an incident that strained Israel's ties with Ankara.
